Being slow tupping since the 13th of October, not many the first 2 weeks. There in with blue Leicesters. Then this last week they’ve gone for it, think theres only 3 out of 110 left👌 hopefully 2 gimmer lambs a piece 🤞😂

Don’t have an accurate figure as I just scan all the ewes together but would think the cheviots would be 160-170% last year. Had a handful of triplets as well. Not a problem with them counting to 1, the problem I have is them insisting on stealing everything else’s lambs!!

Scanned at 137%, less than last year they were over 170%! Probably about right for Cheviots though so happy enough

Not sure if I’m mad but they are my favourite sheep when we are on lambing. Some real good outfits this year. Quite pleasant between the rain showers. Singles outside lambing well on stubble then onto grass when lambed and twins inside.

Is it easy to find true blues still, do you know of anyone using the crossing types over cheviots?
Yes still plenty of proper blues around, so plenty of sales for them. Ive used a crossing type before when I was short of a real blue tup and left nice enough lambs just a bit narrower and more spindly, few dark patches on there’s faces which doesn’t bother me but if your going to sell the gimmer lambs it’s not as desirable. Still a traditional blue is a far better sheep in my unbiased opinion 😉
