Older off road 4x4

Posting here as I figure livestock farmers do the most off road work.

I'm kicking around an idea to build an eggmobile, get me some layers and move them often, possibly daily.

The eggmobile would be build on a single axle caravan chassis and weigh less than 900kg (should accomodate approx 350 hens that size) according to the specs I have. It could be made smaller but let's go with that figure for now.

Challenge is I have pretty interesting land, steep, hilly etc. I think it would be foolish to try to move something of that weight on that ground with a quad and I don't have a tractor.

So, I was wondering about an old SWB 4x4, but which would be best for that job? The budget, less is best. It won't be going on road.

I'll post a pic of the land as an example, pictures, thousand words. I'll need to bring in a digger to clear a few paths but I've walked the place today and have some OK routes I think. Don't mind the old bracken, I'm winning that battle.

Fordson major. I know its not a swb 4wd but you want reliable and tough, and a cheap 4 by 4 will be neither or absolutely rotten. Alternatively a good 12 v winch and anchor moved with the quad?

Hell fire, what a place! Sorry I mean what a place, looks like hell 😮.

Dihatsu fourtrack on mud tyres.

It's steeper than that photo does justice too. Place looks much better today, ocean of grass there at the moment.

Dad had an MF35 which I sold this year as it needed a lot of work, seen it get stuck in lots of places without anything being towed which is why I was thinking 4wd. The winch was my first idea, but anchor points limit range of movement which would be a safety problem as it may force me across slopes or into places I'd rather not go.

Set of duals on the back, wide wheels on front and it would have floated. A 4wd on extreme mud flotation tyres will go anywhere but they put a hellish strain on the driveline and suspension/chassis. If anything is iffy it will go bang when you push it. You then have a dead 4wd that needs a helicopter to get it out. If you are sure you want a 4 by 4 though, what about an earlier discovery? Really a 90/110 underneath, parts are cheap, loads of knowledge online etc.

I was going to suggest a 35 rather than a 4x4 but sounds like you have tried that. My next suggestion would be a SWB Terrano but having had both for many years (still got both actually) I think my 35 will go more places than the Terrano.

One hell of a place you have there John! From previous posts I knew it was a bit extreme but that is a fantastic pic. Not sure I would want to try farming it though. :D

I'd go for an old 4wheel drive tractor with diff lock nothing hefty 60hp zetor pick one up £3-4k. Trucks are fine but when they go down they're down. If you're hell bent on a truck then i'd look for a 2.8 swb pajero they have 4 wheel lock on them and not too heavy.

A caravan chassis on normal caravan wheels will feel like you're towing a lot more than a ton on ground like that!
first thing i would do is get a better axle on it , caravan will beach on every rock outcrop , need good clearance or you will rip the floor out in no time , be better to make up a shepherds hut , you can let it out for holidays if the chickens go wrong lol
