Pottinger Tedders

What are pottinger tedders like?

4 or 6 rotors.

Have a pottinger mower which I do like.

Have an 8 rotor here. Replaced a 4 rotor krone.

Son made the choice based build quality and back up.

Hasn't had a spanner on it since we bought it.
Smaller rotors and more of then is best way to go for a good spread.

More than welcome to come and look at ours.

We have a 6 rotor pottinger, replaced a 4 rotor krone. In some regards the krone was a simpler and easier to use machine. If I'm being honest very little difference in spread, which we have been disappointed with, not that it is bad just never quite right in different crops (have tried changing rotor angle etc).

A neighbour has a 4 rotor Tedder that I used to borrow as & when. It was a decent enough Tedder, but the slip clutch really didn’t like heavy crops at much speed at all.

When I bought one, I bought a 4 rotor Malone, mostly for the hook tines and the strong headstock. It’s a totally different beast, moving heavy crops well at a lot higher forward speed.

4 rotor here.
OK, but there's different positions for the wheels depending on how heavy the crop is.
Rotors set low, picks up all the grass, but can leave it in lumps like a Haybob.
Rotors set high, misses bits of grass, but spreads lovely.
Set it somewhere in between then ??? But it's all a bit off a faff.
Headstock to gearbox area looks a bit weak IMO. It arrived to me ( S/H ) with a bolt sheared off at the central gearbox. Fixed now, but something to bear in mind.

That's exactly as we have found, that we never seem to have the rotors set right "all the time", on the krone I could easily lower the links height on the move if it was visibly missing in a thin part of the field, but you can't do that with the pottinger because of its floating headstock design. Maybe we are just missing a trick.

Can't fault it's throughput, can go as fast as you like through even heavy long single cut grass and it will cope.

Slip clutch needing adjustment?

Tbh they usually rust tight and then the sh1t happens!

It wasn’t my machine, but well maintained and not particularly old. It struck me as competent enough, but light, tedder.
As above, the Malone is much better at the job and I would expect it to see me out, but I dare say comes in a bit dearer.

I bought a Malone this spring. So far, so good, it spreads well and it's certainly heavily built. I've no doubt the pottinger is a good tool but the Malone was vastly cheaper. I think it was roughly £9k Vs £13k plus the Malone is narrower on the road.

I moved from a 6 rotor 7.7m Lely to an 8 rotor 8.9m Pottinger this year. Both good machines but the smaller rotors on the Pottinger give a more even spread. I would recommend the’multilast’ jockey wheel on the head stock. This enables the top link to float and the wheel sets the height of the tines from the floor. It means the lad who drives the Tedder can,t fu*k up the the work settings in theory!

The Lely is described as shipped soiled so not brand new.

I have a Lely 6 rotor to sell. It’s fully working but a few years old. No idea where to price that yet.

The Malone price looks wrong for a 4 rotor . I have the pottinger 6.69 and it’s a great Tedder . I wouldn’t like anything any narrower .

At the moment it’s well out of play with these prices. I did ask for a confirmation but not heard back I yet.

Went for the mechanical fence line kit on ours as its always good to get out and walk round and make sure everything looks right.

Can ,if your careful , get away without using the fenceline kit
