Just wondering why these never took off in a big way. Less horsepower more furrows, what’s not to like?
We used to, ransomes TSR 300 3 furrow on the front (still got it in the shed) and a TSR 300 5 furrow on the back of a Ford 8210. As said, not handy on the road, we had to have the front tyres ballasted for traction, as no front draught control. But they did have a place, with the right man on, worked well on a run with an electric pole, you could run with 5 or 8, if the going got hard on the odd steep bank. Went surprisingly well considering only 110hp, you wouldn’t see that these days 😂, minimum of 200 for 5 furrows most places, and ploughs are supposed to be easier to pull now!

Keith Williams who was Dowdeswell demonstrator likened it to trying to push a piece of string up the field on all but the best of land :)
I disagree, it pushed perfectly, and you can move about in the furrow to straighten the run too. The depth wheel is on the very front and runs in the furrow, it’s steel with an extra wear plate on the side that runs against the furrow wall.

Could solve the transport issue by moving them separately, one at a time both on the back, in the same way you'd move a furrow press around? Obviously it's extra time but if you're getting more done anyway?

I guess you'd have to have some sot of front weight available that you sort of take round with you too, for moving the rear plough on it's own. Not as easy as I thought.....

Ploughed thousands of acres pushing 3 and pulling 5, Lemken on a Fendt 612, never found it a problem. Still got it all parked in a shed, but hasn’t been used for years as I’ve seen the light and gone no-till.

The dowdeswell used an on land front wheel setup which didn’t help it’s cause.

Like many things in life we all have different opinions on things, you clearly have more patience than others! If you'd ever had the pleasure of meeting Willy you'd know if he thought it was rubbish, he was probably right!

Abandoned some time in the early '90's when folks gave up buying proper tractors.... ;)

Note how they weren’t daft enough to push it to running a whole week. 😁😁

I don’t think you’d get away with swapping drivers and re fuelling on the go nowadays. The most impressive bit of that film for me was that they managed to get a set of points to last the thick end of 500 acres.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.
