Restoring Rusty Mouldboards.

a lot of ground around here wouldnt take that paint off totally and quickly , would still have to clean them up before decent use.
The cost of machinery these days a cover is cost effective and not greasing or blowing oil over at that point is counter productive come next use.
and i say that as not having lots of shed space either.

poor maintenance uses more fuel and wastes time and does a poor job .

Yes, bit of a drag! @sahara !!

These mouldboards are too far gone for flap wheels and such. They have some serious pits in them, especially the bottom three which I think may have been in the ground an inch or two.

I’ve spoken to KV. The original parts are still available but at £220 each it’s a bit of a steep cost for a nostalgia piece that likely won’t ever plough more than a few acres.

Then once I’ve got it done I don’t know what I’ll tow it with. The JD 2850 on 18.4s is a bit of overkill and the MF 165 might find it a bit much, although I do recall Dad pulling a 3 furrow Ransomes reversible with it 40+ years ago.

It was a great match up with Dads MF290 years ago, but I’m buggered if I want one of those again!

The 165 will pull it easily ,,remember my dad using a 165 and a ransome 3 fr ,,full tray of weights ,the type with a handle you had to pull for it to turn over ,,there was a knack to get it to turn in one swing

There is no way I’m selling it.

Dad bought it around 1988/89 when it was barely used. He kept it a few years, my brother won the novice class at The Forest of Arden ploughing match with it.

Dad took on more ground and needed a bigger plough so sold it to a neighbour who didn’t use it a lot so it lay in their yard for maybe 20+ years until I managed to buy it after much mithering.

So no, it won’t be for sale.

At the least I can buy boards that are too long and adapt them. I’ve known that done before.

Discs at the back only. You could fit them on the middle, but not on the front.

There was a knack. A quick flick of the steering wheel and a jab on the brakes maybe.

I used a big KV one season that had a depth wheel which wouldn’t flop over if the front of the tractor was a tad lower than the back.

I used to pull and lift my 3 furrow quite okay with a Ford 6600.
There will be no changeover valve as standard, unless it was bought for a tractor with no spools. You just pressurised the spool to initiate the turnover, and as it flips over centre, you retract it.
If they are indeed No.8 boards, surely the likes of Pan Anglia, etc, would be less money?

well if you cant get pattern ones , might be able to get some secondhand ones with more meat on.
Might be worth giving Graham Dunn a call if there's no one closer.

Aye-up,

I managed to buy back a plough my Dad used to own. It’s a KV LA8NR 3 furrow reversible.

It’s only maybe 40 years old but has spent over 20 years sitting outside. You can imagine the state of the mouldboards. Anything I try and buy is too long. The Spaldings chap said he spoke to KV direct but they don’t supply that type any more.

We have lightly sandblast them but there are still lots of deep pits. There’s no way they will scour, especially as coarse abrasive sands are in short supply round here.

Anything that can be done? I’ve called a couple of metal polishers but they don’t seem interested.

Cheers, Pete.

Have you tried Westlake ploughs for parts Peter?
