RTK receiver for phone/tablet

I have a lot of field boundaries that I need to map, ideally to RTK level of accuracy and without any drift over time.

We have our own RTK n-trip base station.

There are plenty of Android and apple apps out there which do the mapping albeit with a low level of accuracy.

Rtk Does anyone know of any way of improving a phone or tablets gps accuracy to RTK level?

This sounds just the job for an f9p connected by usb to a tablet running AOG.

Depends on what format you need the boundaries in. How will you use them?

Sorry for TLA (three letter acronym) bombardment.

Just use an Ardusimple F9P, will connect to your base station.

If you have windows tablet then could use AgOpenGPS to map your field boundaries and then export them as either IsoXML or KML files to your software of choice.

I should be able to get an rtk signal from my to base station and start mapping with AgOpenGPS?

What do you want the rtk accurate maps for?
Do the maps need to be compatible with anything in particular?


I understand it is possible to use an f9p as an rtk receiver with any phone/tablet instead of their built in receiver, working with any app that will run on the device.

I want to be able to map field/cropping boundaries to then be exported to my tractor gps systems ( Topcon & starfire) as well as using them with my field records software (omnia). I think I can do all of this with shapefiles.

Exactly.

if you are wanting real accuracy you should probably use an IMU to measure the angle the antennae is at, again easy to do with AgOpenGPS, can be done with just an Arduino Nano and a BNO085 IMU and a few wires. ( @DrDunc and @del_boy have made their own IMU modules to connect to AgOpenGPS alongside an F9P).

In the picture below I was helping a farmer map his fields this winter, there is an AgOpenGPS PCB with the F9P and an IMU mounted on it on the rear rack of the Quad, the FZ-G1 tablet on a Ram mount on the front, the iPhone is providing the internet connection for the RTK signal.

The fields are all mapped into IsoXML files these are then used by the AgOpenGPS, Trimble and Topcon systems used by the farm/Contractors and

On straight runs, we paused mapping at the start and resumed towards the end to ping a straight line and thus not record every slight wiggle and wobble.

With all the boundaries mapped, then created headland tramlines and optimised the AB tramlines created off the best field boundary edge.

Your quad setup, is pretty much what I need.

Is there a guide which details how to build/set up an IMU?

I am now trying to bring the IMU into it, which I have assembled, but am struggling to work out how to upload the software onto the Arduino Nano.

Is there a guide anywhere which gives some details of how to get the software uploaded and how to set it up in AgOpenGPS?

I started with the exact same setup as that and I really struggled uploading the sketch to the nano. I think I used bootloader but unsure now and it look several attempt.
I'll see if I can find what I did
I followed this guide when I recently uploaded the nano for section control and worked alot easier.
Have you found the correct files you need in the download section

So you are going to connect via Ethernet?
You will need to power the Arduino with 5v, you can feed 12v into the Vcc pin but the regulator will get warm, so best to put 5v into the 5v pin using a 12 to 5v regulator.
If you use USB you don't need to worry about powering the Nano, the USB will provide that.
USB is easier.

Have you found the correct ino sketch, there will be one for UDP (Ethernet) and one for USB.

Need to download Arduino IDE then open the sketch, make sure the whole sketch with all the files are in the same folder, it needs to open them all.
Connect the Nano to your PCB with a USB cable, connect the port in Arduino IDE, choose the correct board 'Nano' then click upload.

I was assuming that, as I only have one usb port on my tablet, I would need to connect via Ethernet? Can I take 5v from a usb splitter?

This was my initial setup for all of 5 mins before I went the aio route.
Can't remember exactly what I done but it worked a treat. I used a usb splitter to power the nano and the f9p

It was right under my nose, I couldn’t see it for looking.

Apart from a bit of tidying up wires, I think I’m up and running.
