Salmonella/Rooks

Have had an outbreak of Salmonella in the cows. No vaccine currently available. I am convinced its coming from the hoard of Rooks that are about. Has anyone any successful methods of getting rid of them?

We’ve had half a dozen cows abort this month, one cow came back positive for salmonella, vet said vaccinate everything, £12 a cow, £6 a dose, £4k. I’m still thinking about it, did say to get all the vaccines, primary and booster , I’m still thinking it over! Vaccines are a serious cost.

Had to vaccinate for Salmonella about 10 years ago due to having a number of abortions. Horrible smelly abortions. Most abortions happened at the 7 to 8 months in calf mark. Started vaccination and within a week everything was back to normal. Yes cost a fortune, but never want to go back there again. I still vaccinate all cows at drying off and in calf heifers get the 2 jabs 6 weeks apart.

Can kill cows. We had a very bad do of the less common strain about 4 years ago and lost half the cows affected. Only way to stop it was to have a bespoke vaccine made for the initial herd dose then dose with the vaccine for the next 3 years.
We strongly suspect that the culprits were seagulls landing on bread. We no longer feed bread and use a gas gun if crows get too bad. Back that up with lethal force & then hang up the carcasses and they go elsewhere pdq

2 dead cows and it's paid for.
What was the strain? One is deadlier than the other but I'm blowed if I can remember which it is. Dublinii??

Vet didn’t mention strain.
Back in the mists of time my father took part in a Ministry trial, remember Dublin and Typhimurium being mentioned when I was a nipper.

Had an outbreak probably 5 years ago causing scour in the winter. We vaccinated, vet said a one off would be ok, which it was.

I think I remember you posting about that. Nasty.

We did the same as you, though about it, then a sh!t storm hit us and lost 75 cows, cost us 150k. Do not wait. Do not ponder. Just vaccinate. Stopped it immediately. It was pretty horrendous

We moved vets after, his initial thoughts were it would fizzle out, took dead calf to Liverpool uni and the lady vet there gave me some very good advice, came back as the strain from deer which strangely had been seen on the farm that week
No deer here, a few foxes, that’s the lot. Cows out grazing, but had access to bales for a week spanning the abortions. Some before, some after. Also found listeria in one cow.

We had an outbreak in 2017, I can't remember exactly but probably had 25 abort and several dead in the space of a few weeks.

If we had vaccinated I'd have been the first to say what a wonderful job it had done because the abortions stopped after a couple of weeks and we've not knowingly had a case since but there was no vaccine available that year either so I've never vaccinated for it. I'll probably see it again one day but not vaccinating since 2017 has saved me nearly £80k.

Mine was salmonella Dublin

I'm all for maximising profitability but nobody seems to talk about the animal welfare benefit of not getting a spell of abortions and even losing cows every 10+ years. I'd rather spend the £80k even if I only think it might only save me £60k from preventing an abortion storm and potential cow losses. Let's not forget these animals are under our care.

I would tend to agree. And also the stress and anxiety that that it causes
