we are thinking of buying a second-hand self-propelled sprayer 24 mtrs 3000 ltrs or thereabouts Having looked at websites and adverts I am baffled some apparently have no brakes. then there is the issue of power that seems to vary tremendously even among what appears to be virtually the same machine any help or advice would be gladly received

Depends on the make and your terrain as to what power, like a 170hp Househam but then most in the area went for the 235hp version for more hill power and veg work.
What’s your nearest village?

I’ve got a 59 plate househam and it doesn’t have a brake pedal. You don’t want to be stopping in a rush loaded. If your on hills then 150hp 3000l tanks will be quite underpowered when loaded. I’ve got 4000l and 235hp it makes it work on hills if you have half a load on or more.

Those without brakes presumably work by altering things in the transmission.

Remember that many of these things will have hydrostatic or CVT transmissions so 150hp might not feel like the 150hp you get in a tractor. A few certainly used to have full powershift transmissions.

Hydrostatic.
Have idly wondered what happens if a motor hose let's loose... Guess you hit the parking brake switch and genuflect.
Had the main drive hose from pump to hydrostatic drive burst on a Claas Dominator on a steep slope, the combine free wheeled down the hill, but thankfully is also fitted with a foot brake.

No foot brake in the Chafer 418 either, had wheel motor let go but the other 3 stopped it ok. Not sure what would have happened if the main pipe had gone as the handbrake is in the wheel motor as well 🤔
Thinking about it, it was the handbrake system that caused the sudden leak 🫣

I believe the parking brake is actually a plate pack in the rear wheel motor hubs, thinking about it, when oil pressure is absent, they default to "applied", meaning that in order to to trailer a machine due to a motor problem, you have to screw the brakes off manually with a bridge plate and a long bolt.

Bateman here with no breaks pedal. Not been an issue. Pull back on the hydrostatic and she slows down, break lights even come on. Same as combine.

little haven through to herbranston
Relatively flat then looking over from here?

Local contractors slightly north of you had a Jag 900 go down Newgale hill (heading south) with a burst pipe! The driver near on needed new overalls and thankfully nothing was coming over the bridge as he coasted over it!

Because of where you are I’d be looking at househam/Bateman or knight - so either Jim at John Rhoades (by Carew) or Jim and Jason at Trewarren for a knight..

I have a footbrake in my RB55, only ever used when stationary on a hill during road travel. Pull back on the hydro even at 55k and she soon pulls up. She’s a big girl but needs all 275hp to get around when full on the road. Flys along empty.

What ever breed of sprayer you buy the more power you have the better. I’m in a very flat part of the world and have 1350 gallon tank when full in soft ground it’s making use of the 370hp. Hydrostatic is a major loss of power from engine to the wheels. If your in a position to be choosy get one with a rate controller that isn’t a pwm valve. The older butterfly valve type are much simpler and cheaper to keep. Brakes are a must. one accident and not being able to slow to a stop is just a recipe for disaster.

We've a househam . Absolutely hate it underpowered and the no brakes is horrible I've given up contracting that I used to do with an agribuggy because if and it's a big if it'll go up the steep stuff no way I'd be wanting to come back down it !!!!!!
