Friend has taken on 15 acres of cr-p grassland, not cropped last year. This year it is just a mess of weeds with a lot of docks and big lot of ragwort.
Wants to clear ground, possibly put in a fodder crop for a break and then reseed but what to do with what’s there ???????

Eat it to the floor with dry sheep. Then bale graze it with cows in the early autumn (assuming it's dry enough).

I have a similar question. Sorry to hijack the thread but I think it is relevant. It is a college question for the experts to answer.

If land is let for grazing with the sheep until the end of the summer, and no sheep arrive, what is the legal position? A substantial deposit has been paid up front but part remains unpaid. If the grass is simply left so the tenant gets no benefit. It will die off leaving a mess and the land won't benefit from being grazed. The land owner cannot cut it for hay or graze it with cattle as that is trespass. The tenant cannot do that either because it is breach of contract, the agreement says grazing with sheep. What is the solution?

Work out how many weeks the deposit covered and after that tell them it will need grazed down by other stock. If they still want it then pay the balance now. Tidy it up with cattle later.

Not sure about Ragwort Sprays but you need to burn it off with roundup then either put corn on it or Westerwolds Ryegrass so you then have options to spray out the weeds
If you put brasicas in there are no sprays and unless you graze it quick you will end up with more weeds
You can overseed the when you have most of the weeds beat , ploughing will just bring more up

If it's green enough to spray with roundup so that then you will have to mow bale and dump
If not you will have to mow and wait till it greens up
If you do go brasicas then put a ley in next spring but no legumes so you can spray
