Spring barley without dressing

I always used to think seed dressings slowed down the germination of the seed quite considerably especially the old Baytan. The seed germination can be slowed down due to many factors so doesn’t need slowing down even more by seed dressings , especially when planting conditions aren’t ideal as they certainly aren’t now.

Totally agree. I’ve treated spring down in the past and finished off with some untreated and it’s a couple of days sooner to emerge. Also seen it with roundup on before drilling. Usually the whole field would be done but to empty out the tank I sprayed it out on un planted ground. You could see to the inch where it went.

They do slow down the germination and very early growth rates of seeds- I've seen this in laboratory conditions myself. Put seeds in petri dishes and compare them. Undressed seed flies out of the ground. Unless it's diseased. Always get stuff tested for disease and make sure it is very very clean when combined for seed or else cleaned hard.

Diseased seeds don’t always mean small shriveled seeds So cleaning hard won’t remove your problem. Clean disease free seed started long before it was combined. I’ve used home saved seed from my the same original variety for 8 years. Only seed from a field with two years break from cereals and kept extra disease free thru the growing season. cut early and cooled asap. I won’t even clean it until the bin is well above freezing to avoid cracking from mechanical damage. planting over an inch and a half deep doesn’t help with seed mortality or vigor. If I can get it into moisture plus a quarter inch I’m smiling.

Absolutely, my main concern from not having seed cleaned would be the weed seed that could be in it. Small grains aren't necessarily a huge issue- if you send it away for germination testing you will have some idea as to how viable it is.
