Just for correctness. Barclays became pivotal in the Acorn affairs more than 6 years ago.

As for leverage, according to Phillips himself, the introducer of Phillips to Barclays at Canary Wharf was no other than Peter Rhys Williams. PRW did work for Barclays and it is established PRW had no hesitation in recommending Phillips to his clients so it follows the claim by Phillips is probably correct.
Fully appreciate the Phillips/Barclays relationship started more than six years ago but Acorn arose from the ashes of UK Mortgage Services/UK Country Capitals six years ago thanks to the act of generousity of Barclays Bank. The tragedies that have arisen since then can be traced to that act of generousity or whatever you would like to call it in the circumstances.

Cerainly wouldn't want to call it generosity or in fact anything other than 'cut and run' Barclays had realised they, through their own greed, had been dragged into the Phillips quagmire and wanted out irrespective of the consequences to others.

Yes,perhaps Barclays should be reminded of what happened to those peoples loans in the transition from UK Country Capital to the phoenix company Acorn Country Capital, perhaps they considered that Phillips and co had created the mess ,they best sort it out. As we all know,Phillips couldn't believe his luck, rather than pass on a slice of his good fortune,he proceeded to make considerable gain, 'reassigning' the loans with all the associated Mickey Mouse fees,( wonder whose idea that was ).
Barclays are certainly no different to HBOS/Lloyds,RBS,they have their skeletons as well, although they choose to refer to it as 'secondary lending, out of our control'.Sometimes you are judged by the company you keep,in this instance it puts Barclays in the gutter with the rest of them.

Barclays can use whatever terminology they wish but for them to claim the collaboration with Phillips was 'out of their control' is blatantly untrue. There were regular visits to Highbridge by Barclays personnel on the premise of overseeing the operation. It all went downhill on their watch, they knew it but finanancially were able to escape the clutch of Phillips by way of write off - others, not having this facility were not so fortunate.
I'm surprised Barclays have never tried to convince us of the innocence of Dr Crippen.

Let us not forget David Williams who was "recruited" from Barclay's and promoted himself as "Sales Director". He soon vanished when the proverbial hit the fan, golden handshake and gagging order. Wonder why??

Maybe he recognised that the 'Acorn modus operandi' was something that he did not want to be associated with,he wouldn't be the first to be unwittingly caught in the Acorn net.

Golden handshake? Gagging order? MO something that he did not want to be associated with? Probably well worth an interview by the SFO.

You would have thought so,but the SFO seem to move in mysterious ways:whistle:

Agreed.
Difficult to believe it is only twits like us who see similarities between the Acorn and HBOS MO.

Quote:
The Police in England and Wales Police mission statements frequently refer back to Richard Mayne’s words of 1829: "The primary object of an efficient police is the prevention of crime: the next that of detection and punishment of offenders if crime is committed. To these ends all the efforts of police must be directed. The protection of life and property, the preservation of public tranquillity, and the absence of crime, will alone prove whether those efforts have been successful and whether the objects for which the police were appointed have been attained."

For now - I will leave it for others to comment on the above.

Could we assume that this forms part of Avon and Somerset Police mission statement?

HBOS were taken over by Lloyds, and as was stated by Elfyn Llwyd, Lloyds have played their part in the UK Acorn fiasco, as commented on in the Westminster Hall debate, surely it must now be time, for someone to accept, that there are major shortcomings at Lloyds, and a proper investigation in to their activities is due

Definitely, there's some horror stories out there involving Lloyds Business Support Unit in Bristol, same names crop up time and time again.

The article above is an accurate summary of the HBOS story.
I good read if depressingly familiar to those following this forum.
What is amazing is that by substituting some names it could almost be an accurate description of the UKacorn saga, up to a point.
The major difference is there has been no intervention by Thames Valley Police. It seems A&SP has been more effective in blocking investigation than Cambridge Police were.
I wonder why?

PAGE 17.SDT judgement,
'Mr Jordan QC regarded the idea that the Respondent would knowingly do something that was contrary to his professional duties and knowingly set out to deceive people, based on his experience of the respondent,as ludicrous'

Strategically placed and worded.

On reflection ,people will now wonder what they signed in the manner it was presented to them. Why did the man delivering the documents not witness them? What were the single sheets not attached to documents? Yes,everybody believed the whirlwind 'here one minute, gone the next' attitude of the messenger, what we now know is that this was just another well planned part of the charade. He knew what he was doing, same as the rest,a co conspirator I say,we all know what was driving him,I hope the reward was worth it.Judging by what I have seen I doubt it.
