5 furrow. Budget of say £5k. To suit all soil types from black to white clay. Guess vari width at that money will be shagged? And not ideal when pulling a press which it will be 90% of the time. Please give suggestions with reasons. Locally lemken probably most popular, I’ve only ever used dl110s and 140s which I thought were a bit flimsy. No doubt they have moved on somewhat.

Kuhn, 5 fr x14inch slated are heavy in tough ground they lay hold and on light land they still roll in well

Went from a 5 furrow dp7 to a Kuhn 5 furrow auto reset 4 years ago. Best thing we ever did, we like the Kuhn, makes a nice tidy job, auto reset works well. There's a bit of age about the plough, think it was £3k. Will need boards soon. The dowdeswell we found was shearbolts, we need a auto reset. We found we can run faster with the kuhn...it has a deeper furrow body. The main turn over shaft bent on it too....

Kuhn ploughs are heavy but don't have the strength you'd expect for the weight that's in them. The ploughing isn't that pretty either. I'd rather have a Kverneland.

The only major parts that wore out on our Kuhn was the headstock bushes and the turn over ram bottom pin and bush ,,other than land wareing metal ,it never suffered any structural failure
Shouldnt think you'd go far wrong with a KV if it is a strong enough headstock version, particularly if you dont need slatted bodies.
Next door had a slatted Kuhn, and it was a bit heavy and crude and didn't match well.
Leave Rabe alone, no backup really now it seems.
No experience of Lemken, but it is where I would be looking for a slatted one.
I've an old Dowdeswell that I use when I dont want to break the Rabe. Plenty of bits for them but they never used to set up very well or pull particularly nicely.

Ploughed spring barley stubble with lots of heads one the floor Lemken on one side of road Besson on the other.
Lemken green over with barley Besson hardly any. I think the besson gp skimmers work better at skimming into furrow bottom.
Besson also seems to make a good job, once set to tractor, on different soils without altering, always seemed to be tinkering with Lemken.
Same type of truline settings as Lemken for front furrow and alinement which I think makes for easy draft.
The spurious reversible points are cheap £5 ish and wear for longer.
Lots out there in your budget. Agri-linc have an old one but on original boards which might be worth a look.

Mine stays in the ground better than any other plough I've used.
Pulls lovely and straight and leaves a lovely wide furrow bottom for big tyres. But that lovely wide bottom is a ditch when you've turned A headland outwards [emoji16]

I have seen a few lemken 4 furrows for sale over here for small money is there a reason they dont hold their value. Have been considering replacing my Ransomes with one the auto reset would be handy in achieving a bit more speed when the combi is chasing you.

Swapped from KV to Kuhn moldboard here, KV kept breaking up and bits falling off them, the 2 I had were on No8 bodies, did a good job, one was shearbolt and other auto reset (not a great design by modern standards)
Now run a 5 fur Kuhn and love it, a lot of adjustability (pitch on all bodies) you name it. Did take a while to get it fully set up right but does do a lovely job. It is vari width and auto reset. I also know of someone who runs a no frills shearbolt Kuhn 5 fur and loves it too.
I have not used a No 28 boarded KV plough though, be interested to see how they run, speaking to a chap who reckoned a set of No28 boards on a Kuhn frame would be the perfect plough in his eyes. The Kuhn boards on mine are very deep compared to a No 8, it's a shame they didnt do a more GP type board.

I like the KV variwidth with 29 bodies personally. I can’t afford a new plough and I wouldn’t swap either of my 2 for something else. The 1st one I bought privately off TFF and the second one came from Elliss’s. They really look after you well too.
