Wheat hardness test.

Right we've had a load wheat rejected because apparently it's hard wheat.

We only grew 34 acres, was all skyscraper seed bought from merchant. All stored in same bulk.

Had 3 loads away, 4 th load rejected. Going into Cameronbridge for Diageo.

Apparently they do a Single Kernel Characterisation test for hardness. Ours is 70, which is top of scale. Cut off 40 something.

Does anyone know anyone independent in the UK who can do a SKCS test? Have kept a sample ourselves and want it tested.

There's a seed testing firm in Forfar, can't think of their name now. They might be able to do it. Always been very efficient.

I believe Cameron Bridge has become quite strict on this in the last year after realising how much hard feed wheat has been going in there (allegedly!). Think they bought a new testing machine last year.

Ask to see the calibration records of the machine. They will be assured as well, so should have it. 👍🤣

What's the problem,it will be sold as feed wheat, whole thing is a pee take, sell as feed but gets used for distilling with no premium.

It was meant to be £200/t.

Will now have a haulage charge to redirect it and downgraded value £40/t less.

£1200 is the problem.

Lorry was loaded Thursday and not tipped till Monday morning. Lorry driver that collected won't answer his phone.

Did you not sell it as feed wheat,if you did it's not your problem.

Either way if you brought your seed in and only grew 34acres and thats all you had this is someone elses f'up. Either the merchant who sold you the seed, the haulier, or the end user.
Yeah somethings not right and I'm going to try and get to bottom of it.

For a start they said it had been rejected at Girvan which is other side of country. So redirection charge much more. Then they phoned at end of that day and said Cameronbridge.🤷

Were going to get me results of hardness test for first 3 loads that went in, but no communication from them again today.

So you were actually getting a premium for it going to Cameron bridge, the majority of mine goes in there all sold as feed wheat though, never heard of any premium before,I will have to have a word with my merchant in the morning.
Its to cover wheat futures based malting barley I couldn't supply at harvest due to germination issues, that was fixed at a good price.

I started a thread on this last year. Apparently skyscraper is known to be problematic for testing hard despite being it being a soft wheat. Don’t know what you can do. I had to suck it up. Rather puts me off skyscraper which is a shame because I think it’s a fantastic wheat.
