Wye College Video 1988

You may know this already, but sadly Seale-Hayne is no more either.

I applied to Seale Hayne, but couldn't physically get there and back in a day on the train for the interview, so I never went.

I had three amazing years at Wye, but it was heartbreaking to hear how lively the college and village was in its prime. I just caught the end of it, with the village suffering as the college was run into the ground. There were 20 places on my course an the were three of us.

The pinnacle of this deterioration was Withersdane Halls being let out to house all the police cadets in Kent, which was diabolical.

I still have fond memories though,

of Six Nations in the Fly (I did a bit behind the bar for Cliff), drinking games in the King's Head with two Landlords in the three years and getting chased round the pool table at the Timberbatts by a lad with a fire extinguisher during a lock-in.

The highlight of the week was Monday morning fire alarm check, when various people emerged out of Halls who didn't actually live there.

I never did manage to dine at the Wife of Bath and Strongbow in the union was a mighty £1.20

Very sad to see such an iconic institution allowed to be destroyed
I think with BSE (then FMD) UK agriculture was in the doldrums and Wye had diversified into Equine courses but nothing broader. Undergrad entries were plummeting and the finances were in a hole.

Imperial stepped up with a mountain of cash, thinking they could sell the college farm for building and a deal was done. It was all sold to everyone by Imperial on the basis that Wye's facilities and huge international reputation for research would be prized by Imperial for eternity.

Loads or random business studies courses were started, but in no time at all (by 2004?) all the undergrad courses had been closed.

(There's probably much more to it, but that's the summary as I remember it)

I think that Wye bankrupted themselves building that new tech building or whatever it was opposite the squash courts that is now a school I think, they had to sell to someone.

I quite like being an Imperial Alumnus though.

What a shame that it is no more, I understood that the farm has now been sold to the tenant?

@delilah ?

Solway Zipper or Gamefair?

Sadly the Solway Zipper was discontinued 2 years before my first student loan cheque arrived.

I had 2 Gamefairs (one green one navy) and a Westmorland waxed waistcoat (still use it now).

Always wanted the sand coloured Longshoreman smock, but they are now crazy money on ebay.

Was there 1990 - 93 - at that point Wye was part of Imperial College, it seemed Imperial were trying to close it down as cost more to run than their other colleges not understanding how different it was. Fantastic 3 years!
