Young person Insurance cost.

Quick question, what does it cost to insure a young driver on their own policy on their own car in GB?
Asking because I have been researching it recently for my daughter and here in NI it will take £3500 to £4000 to insure a small car for a first time driver.

Both my lads cost around £1500 in their first year for their own policy both on VW polo cars around 12/13 years old. This was about 2 and 3 years ago as one is now 19 and the other nearly 21. Both passed while 17. Both had to have black boxes to get those prices and still on the same cars they are now around 6-£700 with Admiral, but still have the black boxes.

I would hope she should get insured for half that. Just had a son get his first policy and it is important to look into the details such as job descriptions, etc. If you can arrange the insurance some weeks ahead of actually needing it will reduce the premium. Buying a car and insuring there and then will add to the premium. Putting a responsible adult such as yourself on the policy as a named driver will help.

Look at Martin Lewis (money saving expert) for advice.

Son is a bit of an expert having just had number 3 & 4 17 year old children past their tests.

To have any chance of a decent price got to have a black box.

Policy in young drivers name but with parent named on the policy.
Experiment with quotes, sometimes get different answers with Mam or Dad named

Noticed significantly different prices with the online systems asking the same question 6 hours apart.
Depending on spec under £2000 is good for a 17 year old.
Last month
17 y/o girl 8 y/o Vauxhall Viva £1600
17 y/o boy 10 y/o Suzuki Jimmy £1800
Job makes a difference, 18 year old boyfriend, who is a apprentice car mechanic is paying £3500

Whatever you do 1st 3 years are going to be painful.
20 year old student grandaughter with no claims just renewed at £600 so almost out of the woods

Prices have doubled since 21 year old started. His 1st policy was £1000

Daughter is 17, just passed her test, living at home out in the country, full time student.
12 year old A1 2.0TDI.
AXA quoted £7200 or £6800 with blackbox
NFU quoted £4500
This was with all the boxes ticked, limited milage, me and the wife named on the policy etc. all the things we could do to bring it down.
Know of a poor impoverished dairy farmer who bought the son a new Amorak after passing his test, is paying £9200 for insurance:oops:.
Young driver insurance over here is beyond reason.

Not that you can exactly do much about it but I’d say the car is the reason for the high prices. Its always been like it unfortunately.

get rid of the audi and get something which is not trendy , ie fiesta your audi ,corsa or polo and get something like a skoda renault or citron check the insurance groups before buying , polo group 15 skoda fabia 12 group 5 the same car underneath , son just passed fabia under his own name plus mum and dad named drivers , £1200 no black box as he was going to penalised for coming home from his part time job after 10 o clock , 7000 miles a year although may have to up that as he has another job

As I said above cheapest is a Volvo c30 or VW Sirocco at the moment, cheaper than a fiesta or a fabia, still £3600 though. From what I can gather Insurance in GB is about a third of what it is in NI.

It's an absolute scam in NI and flipped about 2 years ago (was always cheaper here).

Spend a couple of hours (or instruct daughter to), swapping out cars on the price comparison websites. Even try more obscure cars like a Subaru forester or Kia Rio.

You might find you'll have insurance and car covered for £4k...

Students living away from home bizarrely get cheaper premiums.
