At "average" city state sector schools here in Lincoln where a friend has just resigned it is now taking senior management of the school 20 minutes just to get the kids to sit in their seats. That's before any teaching can begin. Then they wonder why results are so poor and why they can't get anybody to teach them. Makes me wonder how long this can go on for. There doesn't seem to be a "liberal" solution. Even at the school where my wife teaches, there are 2 or 3 in every class intent on disruption who ruin it for the others. I'd send them home and tell them not to bother coming back until they can follow the rules. But the school mollycoddles these reprobates and so they consume more resources than the 95% who are there to learn while damaging everybody's education. I just don't think such a situation is sustainable. Soon they won't be able to find teachers for state schools for any amount of money. What will they do then?

There's a lot of it about. Before October half term the vicar gave his usual harvest festival sermon about how we are destroying the planet and misusing it, not directly to our faces of course, but you got the message. On the Sunday after half term, he and his family turned up sporting sun tans. They hadn't got those in Skegness in the 3rd week of October this year. I don't really mind where he goes on holiday but I'll take more notice of these types when they actually live according to their own advice and are willing to share the burden of reducing fossil fuel usage, rather than expecting it is just something the plebs will have to get used to.
I went to the prize giving in the local college, and the college governor who gave the address, spent a good portion of it decrying Brexit and telling all and sundry how it would be bad for the college!

Burnt the school down, what would you do with that pupil ?
I think we have got something fundamentally wrong in our society, where everyone is fully aware of their rights, but not the corresponding responsibilities, I don't know if I am becoming a curmudgeonly old Victor Meldrew, but it seems we have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Took a wrong turn whe they started listening to liberal good dooers , the country was on downward spiral from that day on.

And start vocational training earlier along side English and maths necessary to do the particular trade. Trying to keep some lads engaged in Latin is never going to work. They would have a choice though. Up to them to either conform or get pushed off the course which is a good lesson for later in life.

Hawick high school regularly needs police officers their all day , your not allowed to smack your child’s bottom in Scotland , it’s going well that , not .
I think there should be real consequences for poor behavior in schools, especially those who disrupt the learning of others. I was told of a school here in Wales where pupils will get up, walk out of a classroom and into another class and sit down, and tell the teachers "I can do what I want, you can't do anything about it". Maybe we need some sort of "reform" schools for that type of pupil.

A relative of my ex wife was a police sergeant, he took a career break and trained as a school teacher, he went back to the police (as it was less stressful than teaching) and his first job back was to investigate an arson attack on the secondary school he had been teaching in!

Parents aren't in to smack their bottoms. Latchkey kids or straight to childminder to watch some telly. It's hard work being a parent when you never actually get any time with your child. Bit more support so one parent can choose to be at home when they get back from school would be handy. Not sure what's worse - absent father's or father's who get in at 6:30 and who's first task is to smack their child's bottom.

I read a bbc article the other day in which it said their were 500,000 vegans in the UK (or about 0.7% of population although they didn’t do this maths, just said numbers were growing).
the article also said that 255000 had signed a petition to make veganuary compulsory.
It just shows how vocal they are.

Speaking to some Germsn immigrant friends, been here for 30 years. They have struggled to fit in. Not because they are Gernan. Like my family they never had much money but were brought up "decent". They just cant't find like minded social class now except at church groups. The general population seems mired in chavism unless you maybe live in certain less provincial areas.

I am not big on physical punishment. It shouldn't be necessary. I don't have the answers but through my wife's work in teaching I see the problems and they are serious. Mostly poor attitude and irresponsible parents.

The whole point of the problem is the refusal to use physical punishments. If you aren't going to impose them in schools then you aren't going to be able to impose them in a National Service environment either. The Armed Forces can maintain discipline because all the recruits are volunteers and want to be there - ultimately they accept the discipline voluntarily. But if you are forcing people against their will to enter NS type environments you then have exactly the same problem you do in schools - how to maintain discipline when physical action and punishment are forbidden.

Thus if (as a society) we were prepared to allow recalcitrant youths to be physically manhandled and disciplined while on NS then you might as well just bring back corporal punishment in schools and forget about NS altogether. Then of course there's the male/female issue - in the 50s it was just men who were sent into NS, now it would have to be women as well, on gender equality grounds. Are we prepared to have the same rules for disciplining young women as the men? Equality would decree that you'd have to.

Surely it's all about respect? I wouldn't dream of hitting my Kids & certainly wouldn't except another adult hitting them but they know there are rules & both of mine behave well .
I do know a parent that hits & swears at their child, how do you think that child behaves at school...hits & swears.
Teach them respect from a early age and there's no need for hitting as a punishment.

They still had the cane when I was a school & I only remember 2 lads getting it, both went to prison, so can't see it worked on them.
I play fortnite with my Son & quite often play squads with his friends, we all wear mics ... its shocking what you can here in the background in some of the homes & people wonder how kids turn out the way they are.

I never had to smack my kids because they knew I would if need be, that’s the difference .
