Aye-up,

My lad has caught the machinery bug. He’s been saying for a year or two that once he’s finished college he would like a crack at a combining season on a big scale.

He would be looking to go somewhere winter 2022-23.

He’s been looking but although there are some big scale operations looking for staff in the USA and Canada, they will obviously be busy during our summer. He doesn’t want to miss the job here so is reluctant to try for a go there.

I’ve not heard much about harvest down under, and I’m aware it’s a vast country with differing climates, but is there similar work available during our winter?

West Australia usually starts mid to late October

Never went myself but I know plenty who did and had a great time.

I'd reccomend going to NZ for a silage season I know a few who did a season and it's a great place to go and see as well .

Oh to be 20 yrs younger again !!!!!!!

Send him to nz plenty of contracting jobs around ashburton I spent 3 seasons out there on the spanner’s for a mf class Jcb dealer and loved it still question why I came back on a cold wet day like today

I believe there's plenty of harvest jobs in Australia but don't personally have experience of them, they often advertise for Kiwi's to go over. @Farmer Roy ?
If he fancies NZ I'd recommend somewhere that does a range of work as some jobs can soon end up with no work in a dry time.
Won't go far wrong with these guys.

A.T. Cook contacting in nz is where a few of my friends went for 2 seasons few years ago. Got on really well. Silage work though not combining.

Went on an exchange to Aus October 85 ended up on a farm with 100 acres of lucerne, a jd 1640 was my big tractor other 2 were grey fergie's. Cut and raked lucerne moved irrgators and spent most afternoons on the local beach

Why is he worried about missing a season here? He's got the rest of his life to do that. I did 5 months in Oz, but I wish I had done NZ and US as well.

I went for a couple of years in 2003. Brilliant!
Went with a recruiter but they’re long gone now. Did the east coast as a bit more going on when we weren’t cutting, although we were cutting nearly solid from October to March.. Was based in Moree but went up into Queensland then worked our way down south, then back up for summer crops.

Plenty opportunities in west Australia in the wheat belt. As said above harvest will start north of Perth late October will carry on through January the nearer to the south coast you get. Spent a season there in mid 90’s.

I went 07/08 08/09 and 09/10 loved it getting paid to see the country and learning to repair tractors with out access to new parts next day some amazing little engineering shops hot sun cold beer and a couple of friendly kiwi girls what more does a 20 something year old want
