Dissertation Research - Lynx Reintroduction *Admin Approved*

Hi,

My name is David and I am a student at Scotland's Rural College doing dissertation research on the potential reintroduction of the lynx. I'm specifically focusing on farming opinions towards the reintroduction, and what makes a fair reintroduction. If you have a minute, I would very much appreciate any responses to my survey - it takes no longer than 10 minutes:

This survey is not affiliated with any pre-existing government, or private lynx research - it is purely for academic purposes. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected]

Many thanks,
David

It'll be a bit like poking a hornet's nest asking questions like that on here.

There's only one way to test this which is to conduct an experiment on an island with both deer and sheep owned by a willing participant, if such a place exists. So if it goes wrong, at least it would be contained.

You will only get strongly polarised views without further evidence.

No shortage of night vision and young lads wanting to use it these days. I can't see them lasting long in the Highlands. Scottish wild cats were really stupid coming to a call when they were around. Not half the brain of a fox.

no need to research, virtually 100 % of sheep keepers would be against it, however quite a large percentage of landowners would be in favour I would bet, as quite a lot of land is owned by charities who dislike farmers and equally want to virtue signal. I would think most livestock farmers would dislike the idea.
do you think livestock farmers might like the idea more if proper efforts were pre-emptively made to prevent the loss of livestock? e.g., reinforced fencing or guard-dogs etc

On open moor...? C'mon please sensible suggestion only. There is not a chance in hell that any livestock farmer would entertain such a predator release. We care for our stock, in spite of what some from the wierder fringes of society might feel .

Reinforced fencing around the Lynx "might" have a chance, right up until the first storm brings a tree down

They told us Sea Eagles wouldn't take livestock. It took SNH over a decade to admit that they do, in that decade many lambing percentages on the west coast dropped 30-40%.

Compensation? Nope. Culling? Forget it. You just have to get on with it pal, don't you know the future is trees and tourists?

What controls lynx or stops them turning into a pride? Is it the wolf? That would put the kybosh on a good amount of livestock farming.

I find this ecosystem thing fascinating, but how many species do you need to bring in to balance the whole thing up?

Christ Almighty, if you’re that fascinated by these predators watch the bloody things on David Attenburgh and stop destroying the lives of animals and people who have never done you any harm. Do you think because you don’t actually know them then that makes it alright?

The obvious next step after wolves is to reintroduce humans to control them……oh…….er………hang on a minute…..🤔
