Camping fewer bookings this year than last

Whilst post covid was on, we got permission for 8 pods on a piece of land, priced it all up and materials, pods etc all were going up at an alarming rate, glad we didn’t go ahead And do it, it would of taken years to recoup and extra work/hassle,
We had same thought and obtained consent for 9 more touring caravan pitches. We have done everything except the electric which is a long story.
I agree bookings seem to be down, though I have not actually done the sums. We are doing well with stop offs for the NW 500 route in Scotland, and Germans. Formerly Dutch. Lots of people spent £70k on a VW T5 or similar during 2021 so the novelty hasn’t worn off yet. Don’t panic though, summer holidays due soon.

Every Tom dick and harry has a shepherds hut, or campsite for 28 days round here, our camping barns are ticking over but certainly not busy, glad their all paid for, Been going 10 years now.
Several holiday lets opened up locally also, all very high end beautifully done out, hate to think what they've cost, take some paying off!
Getting the same here lots or shepherds huts camping pods etc. We had the first shepherds hut in the North York Moors National Park. Doing 9th year now wouldnt like to be starting now

Anyone else finding their bookings are well down on last year? Expenses are the same spending a lot of time cutting grass an keeping ablutions clean etc.
I wonder if it's lack of spending power or they're all back to flying off.
Perhaps see haymaking thread. I am sure cost of living will be playing a part but with the weather of recent months I cant imagine it is doing much to help drive summer bookings. 🥶☔☔

Holidays in UK are far too expensive to be stuck in the same crappy weather you can get at home. £100 a night to stay in a tent or caravan for a family to then have a go to a cinema, swimming pool, theme park in daytime.
Well I quite like holidaying in England esp Cornwall Devon Dorset and last year there was far to many of the ' lot ' that should be in Spain or wherever they go in our faces all over the beaches and towns so hope they have gone away this year .....

As for £100/ night for a tent !
Don't know but got a self catering single room annex for Mrs & me at start of August for £550 for 7 days .

Me and the wife went away for 14 days start of June, all inclusive six star resort in Turkey for £1200…. Works out at £85/ night including food. That’s why it’s on its arse, because you get better value for money going abroad.!

That's ok if you like abroad but we like UK ....
We love the uk, and go on plenty of short breaks in Cornwall, wales and the Peak District. We can jump in the car on a Friday afternoon and be to all 3 in a couple hours.
But to the most of the population needing to tighten their belt with the current financial situation more and more are looking at it from a purely financial stand point. And that is you can go abroad and get guaranteed sunshine and somewhere for the kids to play etc for less money.

Cost basically. My friend is currently in Greece. 2 adults, 3 children all inclusive, 5 star resort, transfers, insurance etc for £3500 for 12 nights. He priced 12 nights up in Devon and it was £4800. It’s just to expensive here now and on Saturday it was recorded as the busiest day ever for plane flights. Think the figure was 137,000 in a single day. So everybody is firmly back travelling.

The £4800 must be a first rate holiday let.
Camping two tents £50 a night 12 nights is £600, admittedly not in hot spot Devon.
A far cry from your £3500.

I’ve been camping twice, both times ended up very wet and a very argumentative other half… swore after packing up a tent in gale force winds and ending up wet through that we would never do it again. 🤣
A holiday where you need to build your house when you get there is not really a holiday in my eyes.
always end up with a bad back on an air bed too

Where did you find that deal? We are tempted to bugger off abroad if the weather doesn't improve and I've had a couple of people recommend Turkey.

I would highly recommend it. We went with a package deal she found on TUI one evening. Was a very nice hotel really nothing to moan about, right on the sea front private part of the beach to lounge on etc. only advise is to take euros not Lyra as all the locals prefer euro and you can haggle abit easier as the maths euro-gbp is easier in your head than Lyra-gbp.!
Personally I would wait until September now, mainly due to price and secondly our last 3 days the temp really started ramping up to the low 40’s. Too hot for me! I burn like a twit!

It is the same in the caravan world. Since covid and the explosion of motor home ownership getting a site without pre booking has beeen very difficult. We do a bit of caravanning this time of year and due to the nature of my job, pre booking is not really possible and the last few years it has been difficult to get on our first choice sites last minute, this year however it is easy. Also getting offered deals on certain sites, never seen that for years.
Its getting tougher out there.
