    Dairy cow bolus

How many folks bolus their dairy cows? What do you use? We've been giving ours bagged minerals through the mixer, I've just done the sums and it won't cost any more to bolus them. We've had cobalt deficiency in the sheep and I think some young stock which have improved a lot since I bolused...

    Bedding scarcity

Is a lack of affordable bedding a reason for dirty cattle or a reason to sell cattle on welfare grounds?

    Crystalix vs Supalyx high energy

Hi all, normally a Crystalix block user but Supalyx seems a good bit cheaper local to myself. Is the Supalyx block as good a product or is it simply less money for a lesser product? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Another BBC article Biased against farming.

Surely the whole concept of modern payments is to permit the base price of foods to remain low before countless middlemen put their margin on it? Quite simply how much would the price of food at farm gate have to rise in order to offset the contribution made by payments...

How early can you drill winter wheat?

Without worrying about disease and grassweeds. Theoretically how early could you drill winter wheat without it going to ear by Xmas? I understand the winter varieties need to go through the vernalisation period, but that most varieties don't require this as much now due to cross breeding with...

Thin crops of brackled barley and crop lifters.

Do you use crop lifters especially in a year like this , with thin crops of barley now brackling down due to the heavy rain? If you use lifters will you be putting extra ones on to try and save a few more ears of the already poor barley crops?

    What does Wolds land mean?

@DrWazzock mentioned how good Wolds land is. I know they have this land in Lincolnshire & Yorkshire. I would have thought steep, stony, shallow & prone to erosion. But are there different types of "Wolds". JSR farming grow potatoes & onions on Yorkshire wolds so that must be good land...

    Sheep EBV’s

This has probably been covered before, And argued in plenty of other threads, But here we go again anyway, Im a big fan of the theory behind it but in terms of looking at animal I can make sense of it in my own flock the Big tup is in the top 50% of the breed with poor figures in terms of...

    Coccidiosis

Hi I don't post much on the livestock threads, we have had started to have some trouble with cocci this last month in the calves. We run sucklers and the calves are outside with their mothers on grass. About a month after turn out (early April) we had one with it(died) and since had another 2...

Is you Lucerne still growing in the dry weather?

As above. How do you graze it without incurring in bloat? Do you graze it and use it for forage ? Have you grown an area of it for many years? Do you by any chance grow cocksfoot as well which copes a bit better with drought although not that palatable?

    2020 Wool Value

Got the weights and grades back from BWMB and the 2020 wool value is valued at 0.00ppkg. I am hoping that its just because we are early in the season and they are still to set the values! (Which looks like it maybe the case as they havn't paid the remainder of 2019 wool even though the values...

    Click or crovect??

I winter shear my ewes around Christmas and so don’t shear now at this time of year. My ewes would have at least an inch of fleece on them now (some might have more). I usually apply a blow fly prevention around now due to not shearing. I have used click extra in previous years. It seems to be...
