Hi all got 250 acre mixed farm with plenty of cattle which in turn means loads of fym currently growing grass for the horse market wheat , spring barley and maize ( may drop maize yet ) , thinking ahead the grass will help the soil structure and seems a shame to plough it up and it’s heavy clay...

    State of your crops?

Given the late drilling date and the amount of rain that’s gone on them I’m pleasantly pleased with the state of my crops. I do have two small fields that are below par but most are looking well. How are others looking? Wheat and barley below, no rape this year but locally it looks well.

    Sunflowers

Next year I have said that we will grow a patch of Sunflowers as a fund raiser for the local school. People can come and pick a bunch for a fiver or something like that. Need to work on the details. What variety would be a good bet? Not too tall, and not a massive head either. We had some last...

A question to those with experience of Dicurane

We have a product here (one called Vario) that has the same make up as dicurane used to have. I have some here for use but never managed to get any on. When I used to use it in the uk, it was always in November (usually seemed to be during children in need week) and actually I can’t remember how...

    Bean seeding depth.

Winter beans. What’s ideal depth ? 4inches? I guess main issues are crows and pre-em. Have ploughed or claydoned in previously so been well buried. Pre-ems obviously quite strong, pdm, kerb and some clomazone potentially.

    Direct Drilling - Clay soils

Direct drilling on heavy clay soils is tricky. There is a lot of great advice out there, but from those on many different soil types. As direct drilling hinges on soil I thought it would be useful to have a thread based on heavy-ish clay soils alone. just to kick it of; we have a Weaving GD...

    Winter beans post em herbicide

Beans have beaten my pre em spray. I'm mad with myself. Drill guy told me they were in 6 or 7 inches. Turns out it's nearer 3. Went to have a look today with a view to spraying tomorrow and there's 40 -50 % emerged. Gonna drop the kerb but I'm tempted to go with the clomazone. Agronomist seems...

    Winter Beans Pre-Em

So Blackgrass, Cleavers and Charlock are the main issues. For Blackgrass, Kerb is the only effective option. And needs to be pre-em? (Blackgrass isnt awful) How well would a Nirvana work on Cleavers? Could I get away with dropping the rate of Nirvana and boosting with some straight Pend and...

National Beef Association on the wrong track ?

I read in the Farmers Guardian that the NBA are suggesting the age at which cattle can be sold as prime beef be lowered to 27 months to allegedly reduce the carbon footprint of beef production. Firstly I completely disagree with their calculations as slower grown grass fed beef actuallytakes...

    Barley pea mix

This years experiment grew a mix of Barley 150 kg/ha (Westminster) and peas 80 kg/ha (Zero4) as a potential high protein feed for the sheep, worked quite well, need to have a clean seed bed before starting and no sprays that will do both barley and peas, 15 tonne/ha sheep muck pre ploughing...

Innovation Insight – The solution becomes Crystal clear

Written by cpm Download PDF The launch of Crystal 20 years ago introduced a new mode of action on grassweeds and a new timing. But as CPM discovers, it was the mindset change it brought that heralded a revolution in blackgrass control. It was the start of a planned, programmed approach to...

    Glyphosate wetter

Soz, I know this has come up many times, just can't be bothered searching. When using cheap glyphosate at say 3 l/ha what's a cost efficient wetter to use with it? Everyone has been enthusiastic about LI700 from memory, what sort of price is it currently and what rate? Any other options?
