What's best to grow after a spring barley?wheats not ideal I don't think
Not in my opinion. Depends on lots of things though like soil quality and blackgrass. It seems trendy to use spring barley as a break crop, but it isn’t one. Personally I would follow it with a break crop or barley either winter or spring. It was wheat before the barley so is it OK to go a winter wheat again?
I’m surprised at that. I used to work somewhere where the farmer took that view and I never thought the 1.5ww was up to much. What was before the spring barley???? If it was a break then wheat will be ok, I consider wheat after spring barley after a break to be a 1.5 cereal rather than a 2nd.
Lack of poo perhaps??????I’m surprised at that. I used to work somewhere where the farmer took that view and I never thought the 1.5ww was up to much.
No poo and all straw baled for many years. Quite a light land farm.Lack of poo perhaps??????
Winter barley, so any volunteers aren’t really an issue? Then stubble turnips for grazing in order to give a bit of a break?
Obviously that might not work if your an arable farmer, allergic to livestock work.
Spring barley volunteers can be a real nuisance in winter barley unless you have the time to plough or wait for the volunteers to chit. We have just cut 70 odd acres where they were very competitive and harboured Rinco and Net Blotch.
Isn’t there usually plenty of time for most of it to chit before WB needs to be in? I have very few volunteers n my WB, despite half my Spring Barley heads ending upon the floor last year.
I don’t drill WB until early October though, to get avoid BYDV.
