Will block chain traceability replace current farm assurance?

A few supermarkets (Carrefour/Lidl) have started to use it on a small number of product lines (filtered milk/oranges/orange juice). I had friend on farm a few months ago wanting to stick some barcodes on my ear tags to show the principle would work for milk.

can’t see anything replacing red tractor until the NFU do something about the meaningless protection racket (unlikely they ever will )

but yes to answer your question yes of course proper blockchain solutions that mean something to both producers and consumers should replace it


maybe DEFRA will step in a some point and take control ?

i think consumers tend to look for union jack

not specifically red tractors, on the assumption that British products have high stds of rearing, and your supporting British agriculture.

Red Tractor is a brand attached to an assured standard. If blockchain did come in, it wouldn't replace the standard it would just be a different way of assuring it.

when we leave the EU with no deal we will finally be able to promote “buy british “ and stick big union flags on packaging again

It wasn’t, although part of a flag was allowed I believe. What makes you think that we’ll be allowed to flag produce once we’ve left the EU?

im a big fan of carbon footprint labelling on food

this would make clear how bad those imported avocados are and make a big difference to consumer behaviour IMO

2 level of welfare (traffic lights ? )

3 carbon footprint (traffic lights ?)

4 price !


based on the above i can make my informed choice that fits my budget and beliefs

Was having a conversation with one of the supermarkets (or a representative therof - I don't wander round chatting to inanimate objects) and their surveys show that consumers say that they want high welfare standards, traceability etc, but the basket data shows that they abandon that over price.

But the supermarkets make is deliberately confusing to shoppers who would wish to have accurate information to make a choice.
When I shop price is important however I will go up a brand if something is British and good value.

I picked these up for the kids packed lunches in Lidl the other day,could have bought foreign however I chose British to support our growers.

however it should be MUCH lower cost to producers due to the efficiencies the tech would bring
