Cattle stranded on ship in Spain must be destroyed, say vets

You can imagine what the real reason was for the delays. They knew that if they waited until we sent 3 lorries at once, they would have a better chance of getting the “folding” paperwork they really wanted!

So you reckon corruption and the expectation of pay-offs is rife in Spain and possibly Turkey? Mafia perhaps?

Just helps to show that live export is a minor issue in terms of UK production. There's a hell of a lot more live export on the continent. Thousands of weaners pigs face over 9 hour journeys into Germany from surrounding countries for instance. And a lot of cattle go out of Spain to the middle east including dairy calves. Yet the EU have the gaul to assume we're the ones that will lower production standards......

Personally I'd like to see the UK government raise standards in all kinds of industries then exclude imports for not meeting our standards. Then start hectoring the EU for being backward.

I have no issue with cattle being moved like this. As someone pointed out the conditions appear no different to a slatted unit. The issue appears to be what happens when the health status of the animals changes in transit.
Was there not a issue a few years with uk calves going to ROI for rearing then being sold on as bull beef via boat. I think there was a Panorama programme about it?

It’s a big industry elsewhere in the world, shipping cattle. I would be reluctant to condemn it on the basis of one incident. A lot of investment and attention to conditions has occurred (rightly) recently. A mate of mine has been involved shipping from WA to Indonesia and reports animal welfare was very good on the boats he was on. The criticism has been conditions at destination. This too is changing and the fattening units in Asia are employing Australian stockmen and building modern units for housing and handling which would shame many in the U.K.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
