Do fishermen have it easy

Its bloody hard and dangerous, they deserve what they earn.
My dads uncles had a boat, a seine netter out of scrabster

My bank manager goes on about a boat where the crews bonus was an audi a3, each!

Remember talking to a boy off I think the Kingfisher or maybe the Wm Henry. He reckoned that the film “The Perfect Storm” was actually quite realistic.

No land to buy stock seed fert feed sprays the list could go on , I’m sure it’s not as good as easy as it looks but
You could do the same with a parcel of land TBH.

If you separate out the land ownership (an investment) then grazing what grows with someone else's livestock isn't far different.
(Except you can walk home a damn sight easier than swimming or riding dolphins).

I used to live at Kaka Point and the local fisherman offered me a spot in the crew. I only did the one trip, was good - but not for me.
I love the ocean but it's nicer when you can still see where land is.... once you get away from that it feels a lot different.... he looked after me though.

I felt a bit stink declining the offer of a fulltime spot but he was fine with it, said it's bloody hard just getting people to go on the boat.
Nearly changed my mind when the pay went into the bank though! $$$$$$

Working on a farm or working on a fishing boat, I'd take the farm 100 times out of 100.
No idea which would be the easier business to own, like most businesses it probably helps to be born into it. If you own your farm you always have the land to sell if times get tough, both businesses will probably see more interference from governments in the future but the population will always need feeding.
Perhaps both are safe occupations from a job security viewpoint?

A good friend of mine started life as a fisherman did a couple of years and made a lot of money, then lost all over the next year. I think its a bit like growing onions or potatoes

I suppose the elephant in the room is the long-term sustainability of fishing. As the population rises so does the demand for fish, and not everyone in the World is abiding by quotas and labeling rules.

So, what about the alternative, Fish Farming ?

I'm just amazed at the whole tone of this, over the years I've heard this sort of thing time after time from peopel who are employed and paid an hourly rate/salary who cannot work out why they get paid £10 an hour, but their employer charges their time at £25 not appreciating all the overheads an employer has to absorb. I did think that on here most if not all people realised the impact of fuel, machinery, consumables etc on a business.
There have been a number of TV programmes in recent years about the fishing industry and the costs mentioned are staggering, trawlers using £1500 of diesel a day, nets getting snagged and lost at £15k or more each, huge repair bills etc. One programme I saw recently showed the result of a large wave breaking as they hauled the nets, the impact literally tore a steel gantry apart.
Finally when they reach port they are at the mercy of the auction system, fresh fish has a very short life, they have no option but to take the price on offer, their catch would be only fit for fish meal the following day.

It is without doubt the most dangerous occupation in the UK at present and they have my utmost admiration. Yes many seem to drive rather upmarket cars and have nice houses, but what use is an expensive car and home when you spend 4 or 5 days a week on a trawler heaving across the North Sea ?

in Asia at night when they seem to do all the fishing the horizon is completely covered by the lights of the boats and the nets I saw would have caught everything.

Anyone on the marine traffic app? I think its fascinating, can waste hours on it!
Only glance at vessel finder when a massive tanker comes in that looks over 100,000 tonne. 185,000 is the biggest I’ve seen pass by me. Always interesting to see where they have been in the last few weeks

Grandfather was down the mine before the NCB private mines , mother says he grew to hate it with a passion but he did his stint from the day he left school till 65 , for all he disliked working down the mine he apparently always said farmers and fishing was far worse, I could never understand the farming bit but can the fishing, I’d rather go down the pit than on a boat .

It’s the investment I’m on about!
they put nowt in but just take from the sea on the whole
Skipper pal. Boat owned by well known firm.
The boat deducts, net , gear and all consumables from the value of the catch.
The owner then takes half.
All food and crew gear deducted
Then the Skipper takes 2 shares.
Engineer takes share and a half.
Crew take 1 share each.
The young laddie gets a half share.
Did 11 days at sea in the western approaches and they got off the boat owing the owner money!
