Why do we bother trying to farm? Everything we do, we seem to penalised for in every way! Welsh government is the worse thing that ever happend to wales from a farming preservative! Cap payments ending... and replaced by what?? Paid to plant trees and flood land that has been drained to produce quality stock! Complete wales nvz zone.. many will go out of the sector im afraid! I’m all for improving water quality and the environment but this will make things worse! What do a bunch of politicians now about hand on farming it’s just figures on paper for them. First of many bridges to cross for us after leaving the mighty EU!

its the same whichever regime you are under ,what you have to get to grips with is politicians are only interested in themselves and getting votes and in this day an age producing food commodities is not a vote or sound bite winner. Whereas going green ( without any recognition that farming is the greenest industry) paying the feckless,supporting the other god knows how many new genders and creating a greater governmental monolith employing millions of and by extension supporting the clipboard warriors who number more than those folks left wealth creating can afford to keep in the long term
Run with it,embrace the new schemes and milk them for all you can get.
With a bit of luck farmgate prices will hold firm and make subsidies seem less important.

Couldn’t agree with you more! Labour gov in Cardiff have always been anti farming and those lost are real environmentalists and they give the public the wrong impression towards agriculture that what really gets under my skin! its in your hands ,starve the feckers or relax a little and push at every turn to educate the population that food for them has to be produced and the best comes from near them ,whilst at the same time doing as yale says above ,though I would rather say misguided policies
if every farmer went on strike in the uk like they used to in France there would be mayhem. Trouble is here no one is loyal and is ready to step in to make a few quid on another

Looking back across the border there are plenty of reasons why you’ve been better off than the English.
Subsidy payments have remained more generous with their historical links, when SFP first came out I picked up a leaflet from Carver Knowles at the dairy event showing that a 1 million litre dairy farmer would be 100k better off in wales than England over a 10 year period.
Farming connect have given some rather generous grants over the years that weren’t available in England along with 80% towards a lot of training.
Only 3% of wales is currently in an NVZ, approx two thirds of England is, we are here and there is no discernible difference between the farming here and the other side of the river.
It looks like Wales may be about to catch up rather quickly which I appreciate will come as a nasty shock but I’ve been looking back in envy for quite a few years.
Yeh because we were funded by the European Union. Nice too see somone still looking optimistic tho

Indeed, our Agri Culture is to tread on the next man if it means gaining a blade of grass or ear of corn.
And did we “buy local” when machinery was made in this country? So don’t expect the public to do us any favours.

What difference is it being in an NVZ apart from a bit of paperwork, which I'm sure you can simply copy and paste more or less from year to year.?
The rules I've seen are that you can't spred muck between Oct and Jan, (fair enough), keep a record of what manure is produced on farm (fair enough) and limits on how much nitrogen you can spred per Ha (think it works out at 5t of chicken muck per Ha or 16t catlle muck)
Seems fairly straightforward to me, am I missing something?

Yes ... 5 months minimum of storage in a climate where increasingly the “rainfall events” are heavy and prolonged with outdoor lagoons

A slurry store to hold 3/4 months doesn’t come cheap regardless how much grants will be available! Many farmers won’t be able to afford it and will be pushed out the sector! Paperwork is the least worrying part!!

I just see another very disillusioned farmer trying his level best to produce good food for our population to eat and enjoy. The problems are legion, the hurdles seem insurmountable, the bank is empty and the future bleak, yet all we want to do is feed people and earn a decent living. A decent living is not a lot, but it is a few more pence for milk, a few more pence per kg of meat, and a thank you and well done from Joe Public and maybe even HMG.
Brexit and NVZ has nothing to do with this, the writing was on the wall long ago, aided and abetted by those in power in London who are so desperately ignorant they give their ears to Monbiot, Goldsmiths, BBC and the Junipers of this world. What a complete character assassination has been done on agriculture in this country, and of our good hardworking name. It is totally disgusting, morally corrupt and will drive many good country folk to the end for just doing their job.
I have every sympathy for the OP, I have no real answers though. I do fear for my own farm and family livelihood going forward since everything seems to be bad news.
Livestock farmers are struggling right now, the weather has been terrible as are the prices of cereals and straw. Those on here crowing on about Fendt tractors and which new tractor to buy need to spend a few days on the hills in Wales, Derbyshire, Yorkshire or any damn where except a comfortable air conditioned cab. You don't need air conditioning on the top of a hill in a gale. There's no "in it together" when it comes to money....oh yes I forgot, it's our choice.
All I can say to the OP is don't worry, there is nothing you can do with the politics, nobody wants to listen so stop thinking about it and try to milk it, make the best of it as things arise and times change.

Just been shopping in Lidl, all the middle aisles are blocked off, same politicians, what on earth is all that about? I am just a likely to catch or spread Covid buying baked beans as adding a pair of pliers or duvet to my trolley, and who do they think they are, deciding what is essential or not. I am so angry with the politicians in the Senedd.
