Grass reseed

Good idea! Do you ever graze it before disking? Last back end we DD into a thick sward and I was nervous but it worked absolutely fine!!

Great job there. What drill was used? What seed mix and seed rate? I really want to try a field like this but I hate the thought of it not working!

Brassica crop first. That will be a horde of weeds and couch etc, I would put money on it.

Surely you can plough it provided you kept 5m from the boundary?

I'm yet to see a grass ley killed solely by wireworm. They would have to go some to wipe out enough plants when you are drilling so many plants/m2.

No guarantee it will work with ploughing, weather is the biggest factor with any reseed , but the only fail I had last year with a direct drill was a brasica crop . Grass in the next field came great and had lambs on it all winter, I sell seed so take it for what its worth but I put more on than recommended, but then I did when I ploughed as well

That was Direct Drilled into old Pasture last September NZ Cool Graze with a bit of Extra Hybrid Ryegrass mixed in , its had tup lambs on it up till last week , just had slurry on it . Will take a picture when it gets going .
This is what the experts say can't be done

What that man said! Couch will have had a wild 30 years. Brassica to allow competition and more hits with a total weed killer.
Other soil pests are usually more destructive. The facts it’s been burnt off all winter will help a bit. Use a decent glyphosate also as you are killing proper weeds.

Was a contractors Moore uni drill. Watsons Fyvie grass mix at 15kg / acre drilled one way. Plenty gran lime when sprayed off!! N once it was through the ground. So far 50 acre has been a success. Planning on doing a lot more this year!! Ploughed field next door still hasn’t had any lambs on it and you can still see plenty soil 👀

I use beet factory lime on mine , out of the 3 I used last year, that worked the best . Very fine fast acting
Ploughing is history on my farm unless its after spuds and I don't see the point of brasicas unless you need the crop

That looks an interesting product. Without a lime spreader its easier sticking with the bags (not the cheapest option) but seems to work! You are right we did a field of rape / kale and the grass has now been in a year and there is a lot of thistles which were spot sprayed today which weren't there before!!!! The direct drill is so simple no faffing around working ground burning diesel and best of all not loosing any (goodish) soil to heavy rain we seem to get nowadays!
