Home saved home saved seed

I bought certified RGT PLANET seed and planted it 2 years ago. Last year I home saved the seed and paid BSPB the royalties. This year I’ve home saved the seed ( home saved the harvest from the home saved seed), are royalties still due?

Hypothetically, if you planted a mixture of two varieties, would any resultant seed be a cross of those varieties, so not actually of the variety list on the seed police's website? Would they then be exempt?

(Dear seed policeman, don't bother knocking, I bought certified seed in)

@Simon C looked at this for variety blends from a disease point of view. IIRC most of the blend kept their identities even after growing on the same blend for a few years. Most cereals are self pollinating, so crossing is quite hard work.

Just pay it and support the development of new varieties. If you hybrid was any good, maybe you could then be a beneficiary of Royalties!

That's right, 4 varieties in my blend have stayed pure even after 5 years of re-saving. The ratios of each in the mix has changed massively though.

So are you paying four different royalties or just royalties for the variety that is the largest ratio?
Yes pay for each variety separately. BSPB did a DNA test 3 years ago and charged according to the new ratios of each variety. Got my own test done this year and unfortunately for BSPB the one variety that is now dominating the mix has been taken off the list. Only paid royalty on 45% of seed drilled this year.

Not unfortunately for you!
Have you kept the same mix since you've started or have you included new varieties every now and again if you wanted a bit better rust prevention or protein for example?

No haven't added anything. The highest yielding variety is gradually increasing it's percentage in the mix and so the yield of the whole blend must also be going up. On the other hand it is slowly loosing diversity. I keep thinking I should add some new genetics, but what? Trouble is in my own variety trials I have never found any new single varieties that can match the yield of the blend.

Well shows the blend is going in the right direction. The single varieties might not yield better but should you not be comparing the blend vs the blend + a new variety

How does paying each work? Do you do a pro rata tonnage or per ha pro rata or just 4x the royalties on every ha??

Yes Ben, I expect you are right but which, and how many new varieties do I need to try. Each one independently mixed into the blend. Anyway, I'm all trialed out, seem to have some experiment of other in every field this year.
