How early can you drill winter wheat?

Cereals work on day length and temperature to change from vegetative to reproductive. Sow a spring variety now and it will produce an ear.

I guess the answer to why would be "autumn 2019" but you are of course completely correct that it is a slightly absurd idea.
It's called thinking outside the box!
There is a method of growing wheat called the Bonfil method, created by Marc Bonfil, there is a Japanese chap who's name escapes me at present who also did it. The idea is that you plant early, creating large plants which tiller loads and being in the soil longer means the roots go deeper. Therefore reaching an even greater nutrients and water resources. Andy Howard mentioned it in an article in the direct driller magazine.

I not planning on reaching for the can, and because seed rates would be lower so would seed cost. There are other means of controlling disease.

I can certainly recall a field of Oakley on a past farm drilled early in a late, high downland situation in Wilts that was in the ground for 366 days, I guess many of our northern and Scottish members will have seen that many times!!
Only if you cannot harvest it.
Usually sown up mid October here and harvested by mid September.
Indeed in the last few years wheat has been finished before the spring barley, including this year.
We have much longer day length than you guys in the deep south.

It would vary according to the variety as well as the drilling date. Slow developing varieties like Claire and Grafton were probably okay the last week of August but you also have to take into account where you are in the country. So it is more generally accepted that the first week of September is about the earliest you would want to go and again choose the right variety.
