This is a bit of a last minute but i have got a block of wheat stubble that will be going into spring oats. It has been subsoiled so far and the straw has been baled.

Was just going to leave it but now thinking of trying a cover crop.

Is it too late? If not, what to plant? dont want anything too fancy was thinking maybe Vetch, Phecilia and linseed maybe?

Planted a field today similar mix sown quite shallow, will be a case of fingers crossed but soil still warm and now moist.

In the South will be fine.

See all the cover crops going in after maize.

Ok, so all is not lost then.

What sort of seed rate? Going into fairly heavy ground.
Where is the best place to buy seed? Either as a mix or as straights please.

I like variety, in case something fails.

So this year's maize cover will be:
Forage rye (30kg/ha), oats (30kg/ha), fodder radish, fodder rape, crimson clover. Never done this mix before so we'll see. Can't remember seed rates for the other items

I will put in a field of IRG as well at 25kg/ha.

I found late sept sown vetch to be low yieding with IRG when sown last season.

Although rye, westerwolds, vetch will survive winter sown now you don't get much in the way of biomass before spring oat sowing comes around which could be late Feb in the south on light land. Maize sown late April leaves all of March to accumulate material for more benefit of course. On the other hand free nitrogen, likely to be leached over winter, will be taken up now unless heavy rain occurs before good root formation.

I would be inclined to leave weeds to grow.

This was planted 3 weeks ago at 10kg/ha and is just getting going so I wouldn’t want to be planting it now. I planted some vetch a few years ago mid sept and it was about 3 inch tall by spring
