About to service my JD 6300...just wondering what peoples thoughts are on using JD plus-50 oil or just go with a good grade 15w-40?

I use plus 50 in my tractors and if I go when the parts man is in a good mood I get a discount which makes it only a bit more than Morris or Shell.

I use plus 50 in the combine and 6155r but use standard 15-40 on the 6800,6410 and 3200 and change at 250 hrs. All the older tractors are around the 20 yo mark having used this non branded oil. Plus 50 isn’t cheap even in 205l drums.
Any brand 15w40 with E7 in the small print is the right oil . Actually e7 is above the spec , you can use E5.

Only a guess but I’d say the equivalent is all that equivalent!
I’ve been saying on this forum for a long time that just because oil manufacturers sell an “equivalent” it doesn’t mean it’s the exact same formula it’s just as close as they can get without infringing on patents and copyrights.
Shell oil’s manufacturer Plus 50 II for JD and I can say with some confidence that they don’t sell it under any other brand/package name.
Yes it’s expensive but I wouldn’t use any other brand if oil in any of my JD’s.

I believe you can get the shell labelled equivalent but it's not much cheaper than the JD oil in 205l cans.

Why did Witham oils take jd to court and win
When asked jd to prove their( Witham ) oil
was not as good
Or match 50 oil Got tractors here with upto 20000 hrs on , run on Witham oil
Old 3130 sat on an irrigation pump , some times only stopping on a Sunday evening to change oil ram 24/7 for weeks in peak season
Now just press a button on electric pump on one line
So if oil is upto spec hey ho jd don’t make oil they just get it blended to a spec

Not arguing with you but not all blends are equal and you do have to be careful. If you find one that works for you then great but a very expensive mistake if not.Why did Witham oils take jd to court and win

What @milkloss says, and I’m not going to arguing with you but when you’ve taken as many jd engines to bits as I have there’s a reason I’ll only use JD plus 50 II oil I’m my JD engines.Why did Witham oils take jd to court and win

No I think a dedicated engine oil is better than a universal oil...so the Morris oil to use is Morris Versimax HD4 15W/40.

Even if the difference was 40 quid a drum (20l) that would only be 800 over 10,000 hours

No that is not correct.

It's quite simple, you have the following specs, approved spec, equivalent to, exceeds spec and Meets Spec.
Approved spec is were the oil manufacturer has paid alot of money to the manufacturers to have there oil tested and labelled "approved"
With an approved oil you are getting the same as OEM and warranty by law can not be voided no matter what brand of oil it is.
Everything else is kind of there or there abouts
For most stuff theres not really problem so long as the specs match up or exceed.
There are the odd ball ones though which tend to be axle oils and transmission oils more than engines.
So many specs of UTTO! With different brands having multiple types of utto to cover all the specs rather than just one universal oil as the orginal name implies!
Jcb and manitou axle oil is another, theres just nothing available exactly the same!

No, Just saying if its not approved then its not the same.
Look on the can of the 50 plus 2, i'm sure the spec is printed on the can. If machine is in warranty and you dont want to use JD oil make sure what you do use is approved to the JD Spec
If its not in warranty then your mostly safe with oils that say meets, exceeds etc but there will be variations in the blend on these.
Some genuine oil isnt badly priced IMO, JCB is an exception to that though there oil prices have been ridiculous for years.
