Is this the last straw for pigs?

well he's there now. They bought a large herd that was on their own land. John is also helping with other activities such as the estate that they bought when they sold the pigs to cranny. I'm pleased that someone seems to be doing well out of those arseholes and might have got one over them.

They certainly shafted me.

Whilst I genuinely have every sympathy with the independent pig farmers that are hanging on in there, I do think that at some point they are going to have to recognise that there is precisely zero point in carrying on with this policy of appealing to the cartel for fair treatment, and instead focus at least some of their campaigning time and effort on solutions.

What like Ladies in Pigs promotions, Save GB Bacon campaign, directly lobbying the Minister for an enquiry in to Supermarket trading practices , taking their campaign to every party political conference , lobbying the Grocery Adjudicator , using social media to highlight issues to affect consumer choice

Absolutely. My current plan is that after selling all my own pigs off over the first half of next year, is to become a contract outdoor breeder for one of the big outfits (definitely not one in particular) of about 1000 sows and hopefully have a less financially stressful life.
If that breeder was on fire, I'd put them out with petrol.

Pleased to hear you've got a plan and are remaining within the industry, but very sorry to hear you're selling your herd.

But what do they want ? And please don't say "a fair deal from the supermarkets".

Are the NPA members of this ?

No. Because the NPA cannot be seen to support anything that challenges the year on year consolidation of the food chain.

It is the same in every sector. Folks are paying subs, to national representative bodies, who are actively working to get rid of them.

Its a waste of time pigs and poultry and fruit and veg are now 100% in the hands of the big boys its beyond return, concentrate on stopping cattle going same way forget pigs its gone all over , you want to be a small pig farmer ? Work for a big one .

Edited for you. Which is why i'm not sure pigs can be written off and concentrate on the other sectors. Because the factors that have led to pigs being where they are today, left unchecked, will see every other sector go the same way.

There are a number of farms I go to that have sold out and now to B n B pigs. I haven't spoken to one that has any regrets.

is it a case, that the 'big' processors, have realised, UK pork cannot compete, with its high welfare standards, with imported pork, from areas that definitely don't?
and utilising that, to gain the upper hand on UK production.
It's nearly unbelievable how the pork producers have been treated, l really feel sorry for them. It's disgusting.
But clearly shows what can happen when twisting shysters get their shitty hands on an industry.
Perhaps the best answer, is one posted, if you can't beat them, join them.

Unfortunately the big processors are the most significant members of NPA because they are themselves the largest producers, so NPA are careful not to upset them.
I think that I posted elsewhere on here (definitely repeating myself) that I suggested to an industry elder statesman that some of us should form an association of independent producers, his reply was that soon we'd be able to hold the meetings in a phone box.

Then as @Hilly has said there's no point protesting. If folks think that the game is up, then why are they complaining ? Get PP for houses and have a quiet life. Either protest about the real issues, or get out, because begging the cartel for mercy is painful to watch and surely more painful to be part of.

I've already reached that conclusion and have pretty much rolled over. With one caveat however. There is one firm that I absolutely detest, closely allied to Tesco, for how they drove me and others out of business and dropped any existing suppliers who have dared to protest about them. The full story will come out in time.
