Hi guys,
i am Nikola and i am from Serbia. I am now 4th gen farmer and we work on our small farm of 90Ha (i think its around 200 UK acres). In past we do not have combines, we payed contractors for harvesting. But last year was bad for us because it was raining year in Serbia in fall. It was so strainge this rain at that time of year and contractors just cant harvest all fields in our region on time because of this rain. So many of us lost lot of soyabean because of that rain and sunny days. Corn was good but with moister more the 20. Because of that we bought our first combine John deere 1177 Hydro 4 from year 1990. We bought it from friend. This combine work only at his farm but much bigger then ours they has 400 ha of land

It is good machine for price just over 16000 euro, but i notice yesterday one problem on it (he didnt mantioned it before) I try to change from 2nd to 3th but gear liver want to move easly. So i used lot of my strength to pull it from one to another gears. When combine is on flat surfice changing gear is easy, but on slop surface it isnt. I press brakes when i change gears. ( Changing gears from 1st to 2nd and from 3th to 4th goes easy, only from 2nd to 3th i have problems)

Can some one tell me is it the problem with gearbox or its somthing else and how to repare it?

Sry for my bad English...

Your English is better than my Serbian, so we'll go with English..
Have you tried the simple things like oil in the shift linkage?? You could disconnect the shift cables at the gearbox to see how it feels. Have you checked the gearbox oil level??
If you take the cables off, mark or measure things for re fitting..

I check oil level in gearbox and its fine. I will disconect the shift cables to see how its feels.

When i read comments i think i know where problem is. Probably the problem is in this cables, they probably streched to much and need to be simply adjusted or replaced with new ones. I will try today all tips you guys telling me to do to see where problem is.

Cables are problem, one for neutral speed (the right one in cabine). Unfortunately it must be replaced with new ones, because it cant be adjust any more. So i will contact JD dealer after the holiday to send me new ones. Also i bought service manual and parts manual for 11xx serises of combine from Germany, but i need to wait 30-40 days for shipping because of this pandemic COVID-19...

For now, any advice from this forum is valuable to me for now, until i get my manuals..

We Serbs are crazy about Claas combines, and most of them are from that brand. I think in my region 95% are Claas combines, and maybe 1% are JD brand rest are NH, CIH and DeutzFahr...Massey Ferguson dominate when we talk about tractors (in ex Yugoslavia we produced IMT tractors under the licence of MF, so this is the main reasons why we bought new or used MF tractors instead of any other brand).

My cousin tell me that i am crazy to buy a JD 1177, because he cant handle as CLAAS Dominator 98Sl can (
this refers to the speed of operation more precisely, how many tons per hour it can carry). For our ~200 acres i think he will be good. We have per year around 90 acres soyabean, 50-60 acres of corn/maiz and rest is wheat and sunflower...

Last day we finaly work with combine, barley....its going wery well witj 814 header...and we have good yield about 8.5t/ha of barley...

It was all fine till today. When i try to select on her joystick speed of treshing cylinder nothing happens, because it was to fast at first place around 1100 rpm...green light staying on combine speed (and yes, speedometer works)..ill press 2-3 times that switch and nothing happens, end working day without adjustments...

Is it problem with that switch or in other place?

I would check the pulleys can move in or out. it looks like they are controlled hydraulically. Oil maybe leaking past the seals? Probably electrical fault. Check the fuses as corrosion can cause problems at that age.

I think the issue is the microswitch in the joystick. They're saying the display on the joystick won't move across from forward speed. Try taking the cover off the joystick there's a few screws behind under plastic caps and put some wd40 on the switches and cycle them a few times.

Not wishing to sound patronising but you do know there's a separate lever beside the seat to alter drum speed.
I know of someone who was out on one years ago and thought the table up and down buttons changed the speed of what ever the light was set to, if you see what I mean.

Regarding the gear change it could be the cables but with hydros they stop but keep the load on the cogs not like a clutch witch releases all the load, gently rocking them back and forward on the hydro leaver usually works or catch them on the over run just as you come to a stop.

Yes i know, small one lever to change speed of drum between parking brake lever and drum trashing lever. Its mechanical-hydraulical change of speed not with electric buttons on the table.

Also i replaced cables for gears and use manual to set them properly. Now i change gears with no problem. I just pressed brakes and changed them easly...no need to rock back and foward hydro...

Also menage to fix joystick problem with his buttons with wd40...

Tnx Robbie for advised
