There are heavy duty alloy ones available but the light duty ones are most common. Who are the manufacturers in your case? Ifor Williams or some other company?
Something like the ramp company, but that is not relevant, you informed me that heavy duty ramps were a lot heavier than the 17 kgs I mentioned
What I do remember is they were around £350, steel would only have been I think £150, in fact I was going to keep my old heavy steel ramps but they were slightly too wide to fit in under the new trailer hence I bought the new alloy ones, and as painful as it was on the day it was a very good decision

Care to enlighten me, 'cos there have been 120 posts on this thread and I'm no wiser than I was before.
I have been browsing govt sites as well and they are even less help.
Sigh.

Read the legislation. It's all in black and white there.

and

First question - what kind of driving licence do you have, and when did you pass your test?

Ok a lot of replies on this, nearly caused war !!!
I weighed my Toyota Land Cruiser and 16ft Ifor Williams flat bed trailer eventually today and the total weight for both empty came to 3420kg.....doesn’t leave much room to carry anything on the trailer, going by some of the comments above 😂😂

Depends what licence you have...

Actually no, unless you’ve been very accurate with your plating and weighing you’d need B+E, based on the information upthread for Ireland.

If you’ve B+E, you’re allowed up to the lower of the plated towing vehicle and plated trailer limits.

Did you weigh the trailer on its own, and what does the plate say in the land cruiser

For a b+e license when a car with a towing capacity of 2ton is towing a 3.5t mam trailer yes but with regards only having a b license the law says plated mam
Just to put a twist on this,
Say a 25 year old with B licence only, andwas to drive a swb land rover, pulling an unbaked 750kg gross plated weight small trailer, its unladen weight of trailer is 175kg, an its empty, would he be breaking the law, as the Land rover is plated to tow 3.5 tonne ?

I took my test in about 1966. I am 73, being over 70 makes a difference I think.
Once your 70, you have to renew your drivers license, simple fill in a form and send it off, and renewed for 3 years,
However someone of that age group and has passed their car test prior to 1997 (i think), will have a trailer license and a 107 restriction, the 107 restriction eans you can drive a lorry up to 7.500kg gross, and pull a trailer up to 750kg, meaning yes an old license can go to 8.250kg train weight and be legal,
BUT you must fill in a form and tell DVLA you want to keep the trailer and 107 restriction as well, if you don't, then you loss that entitlement automatically by default,
And your new license will only be a B licence, no +E

It also changes at age 70 I think. Must admit no matter how often we discuss this subject here, I'm never any the wiser in the end.
What I did do before I got to 70 was get an 8x5 750kg trailer to use with y fan wen (4500) in the hope that the little one could use the outfit legally. He has no B+E.

I turned 70 in July.

What I had to do was get an HGV sight and medical checkup (Paid for) before they would issue my first Photocard licence unless i was happy for them to reduce me to 3500 kg only and could have been completed on line.

I started the process the first week in June but it was October 22nd before I got the licence ( the opticians weren't working due to Covid and then when my medical pointed out that I am diabetic (Diet & Tablets) I needed further input from the optician and doctor.

Looks like I have gained just over 3 months but it will need doing again every 3 years..

I’d need to check the law to be sure, but I’m pretty sure you’d find the answer further back in this thread in one of my links. From memory, it’s any trailer less than 750kg plated OR the 3500kg (trailer + car) plated weights total
