I have never even thought about the number of people attending a market, but, if they cancel events with attendance of over 500 people, could auctioneers, split sale days up a bit ? Primestock one day, say sheep another, and cattle/dairy/calves another ? Lot of hassle though. But, as posted earlier, most big shopping centres have more than 500 people a day, you wouldn't think they would close them. Wait and see, is best advice,

Fat stock buyers will have their weekly round so changing sale days might not work.
Perhaps markets could be segregated, if you’re taking sheep you don’t go around the cattle? Can’t see it working well though.
Maybe just a bit of common sense is needed, don’t hang around longer than needed. It will bugger up the social side of going to the market but hopefully the markets will stay open and I can bugger off home for my dinner as soon as I’ve sold..

you can, but who sets the price ? Most private treaty prices are based on live market prices, my big worry, is if m/kts are closed, and have to sell prime deadweight, the s/mkts will force the price down, so that will be baggered. On the other hand, if supply of imported food stuffs is delayed, compromised, or just not available, might be the opposite for our prices. Any way time will tell. I hope its the latter, we lacked the confidence to sell all we have for sale, Friday, as worried about the price, fetched more than we thought ! so should have taken more, although we can hold the rest, some will have to go, private treaty ?

Seller sets the price.

There are some abattoirs which offer to buy through the site using the PrimeStock section. They will bid their grid on any stock offered there.

When it comes to finished animals, abattoirs set the price.

Anyone who thinks it's the live ring is deluded. The buyers - either dealers, or fieldsmen for abattoirs - ringside know the limit they can pay upto, which is set by the abattoir...

Talk today at Sedgemoor livestock market was that ALL prime and store livestock markets will be stopped from operating from some point next week!

Apparently Wales are intending to shut their livestock markets from Monday.

Apparently it was touch and go yesterday if todays market would be allowed to go ahead!

Plans are being talked about to keep the livestock markets going which may include vendors turning up, staying in their trucks whilst the stock are unloaded, leaving the market and then after all stock has been unloaded the buyers being allowed in, all stock would then be sold subject.

Not sure if the above is workable or not.

Expectations are that when livestock markets close it will be for at least 3 months!
Why put the thread title as a statement but the thread is clearly your speculation at the moment, it may very well force markets to close but I would be put a considerable amount on it that you wouldn't be the one passing on such news I might be wrong stags, kivells and gth directors may have you on speed dial to spread the gospel that coronavirus is shutting markets when the time comes....in the mean time stop scaremongering
