Livestock software

The SAC shearwell one needs updated. Hasn't been for years. I think Breedr looks good. Definitely worth a look. Plus its free. The cropping software i use makes GLGM shearwell look terrible. Its all cloud based.

Completely off topic. Sorry. But does anyone know when cattle should be registered through scoteid instead of BCMS?
What cropping software do you use?

Us e Farm Matters here and find it excellent and not expensive. Great back up with help and advice if you need it and Neil is almost always available and can talk you through how to do things if you need it. The software is constantly updated with new features regularly being added. Well worth donloading the free demo and giving it a go and maybe having a chat with Neil. https://www.farm-software.co.uk/
Has it got an app?

Only thing that concerns me with Breedr is what’s paying for it? Is it free to get you hooked then a sting will come!? The other thing is at least the one I’m using is supported, if the chap that’s running the Breedr app decides he can’t fund/support it anymore and pulls the pin 🤔

Yes, I get the "clenched bum" feeling at the thought that all my data is away in the Cloud somewhere. Not so bad if you can do a dump now and then for a hard copy, so even if the software is no loger usable, the important stuff is still here!!

Hard copy is important for visits/audits...

Had issues a few years ago when I ceased paying subs (massive hike and I then gave up keep cattle) on a piece of software and then changed PC's and could no longer access the database when I came back keeping cattle once more.

I have been using the SAC livestock recording program for cattle movements, passport applications etc. I get on ok with it but my laptop is on its last legs. I have an iPad and iPhone. I am grudging buying another laptop as this is all I need it for. I would like to use an app where I can just use my phone while working at cattle and use the iPad in the office. I’m told the sac program is not suitable for this. What does everyone else use/recommend?
I use farm matters great program works with most devices for recording wieghts etc have an ezi wiegh head on my cattle crush and very simple to put data from it into farm matters software has a web based app that is great for using on the go and works from an Android or Apple device (if you have the misfortune of having an apple device) I have used a few software packages in the past shearwell - is a decent enough package but very expensive for what it does and very limited mobile app
Agriwebb will promise the earth and blow smoke up your arse till they have your money and then will tell you the things that you were promised before you signed up won't be looked at for at least the next year and when you dig deeper into the software you realise they can not cross check with bcms to check for errors in your records and that alot of the features are very basic and don't do anything that is required to track performance etc accurately
I went to farm matters as I use UHF tags in my cattle and they are the only software package that connect directly with the UHF reader and are actively developing the software to work more in line with it as well as Neil has added multiple additions to the software to allow me to send data directly to the Luing society and record Body condition scores more easily on my heard as only a few. It is also very easy and intuitive software to use and does not cost an arm or a leg with back up second to none. Also had a months free trial on it before switching and Niel is always at the end of the phone if I have any questions. Also does sheep on an individual or flock bases I use it on a flock bases at the moment and it's very easy to use Hope this helps

I'm trialling Breedr this year. Seems okay so far. It's free, so nothing lost to try it. I've been using Shearwell, which I think is the same as the SAC one.

Let us know if there is anything we can do to help our customer support team are happy to do a farm setup session if you want to find out a few tips and tricks

Thanks for the mention, we now have over 2,000 farmers using Breedr! So good to have you part of the network.

We have a service fee on our deadweight and live-weight trades, we also have a financing fund which helps farmers grow their stock levels or provides the funding to farmers who often sell stores take them through to finished. There are 30 of us that work for Breedr and we don't plan on going anywhere! Let us know if you have any other questions.

Their idea is that they charge a commission on the trading side of it, can't remember how much I've been giving it a try and it seems very good so far

Thanks for your feedback (y)

I have asked the question via your support line, but a quickie...

Can Breedr provide hardcopy printouts of the records?

Yes we think it’s really important that you can download your data, it’s yours after all!

Every report on the web portal uk.Breedr.co can be downloaded (click the 3 dots in the top right of the report) and you can download all your animal data using the download button on the my animals page.

A lot of people will be starting spring calving soon and ordering tags. You would think if they were going to roll out high frequency tags they would have done it by now.

We've just ordered ours. Not waiting on them
By what we been told my most tag manufacturers is none of them going to make UHF tags at moment we’ve just gone to electronic tags this year and using a reusable eid tag in bought in cattle. Just another typical Scottish government cock up. By what I’ve gathered it was Bob Yuills baby to be different than every where else. Friend told me he saw 3000 cattle through a livestock mart in Australia and all read on low frequency tags with no issues so why on earth does Scotland need to try and be different nuts if you ask me. As to Scottish grants there was on original scheme letter had to be capable of reading uhf tags but there’s no one actually making the stuff hats likely more why they changed tack!

We have been using low frequency tags for years. Got on fine with them.

The benefit of uhf tags ive been told is a tag reader can read multiple tags at a distance. Whereas the low frequency ones have to be scanned individually.

This will only really benefit slaughterhouses and marts where large numbers of animals being dropped off at a time. The scanner above pen will read them and automatically register movement on.

When I spoke to scoteid when applying for capital grant scheme. They reckoned they would be on dual frequency tags by June this year. So I didn't see any point investing in something to read uhfs. When our current system would continue to work.

We use Breedr, you could use your iPad to log into their web app so you can do your movements no need for a new laptop
Does breedr leave you with animal history. For example can you look at animals that have left your farm. A suckler cow you killed 2 years ago can you have a look at her calves she produced? This is something herdwatch can’t do which I find frustrating

We have an archived animals section that stores animals that have died or moved off the farm. Our reports also can show animals no longer on your farm. Hope that helps
