I haven't trawled through much of this thread, but according to my dad, there was a professor James from Sheffield university ?? who spent most of the 1970's telling anyone who'd listen about the dangers of dairy produce. Did a fair bit of damage to the industry. Turns out he was sponsored by Stork margarine.........
Is there something sinister behind all this methane / vegan / anti farming crap today ?

And add to that list: huge pasta producing company Barilla, a vegan Saudi oil sheik and other fossil fuel companies eg Shell, Yara the fertiliser company, a few vegan professors from Harvard and Oxford, some Seventh Day Adventists, a Norwegian hotel chain billionaire, Bill and Melinda Gates, Bill Clinton, Ford, Rockefeller and other investors in the "Beyond Burger", and Christiana Figueres, former Executive Secretary of the United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). (Frederic Leroy and Martin Cohen https://www.efanews.eu/item/6053 ). Make no mistake - agriculture is up against it! All determined to divert public opinion away from the fossil fuel industry - farmers need to embark on a huge public education campaign to counteract this.

I thought Frederic Leroy was one of the Good Guys?

I'm not really sure what the point of this thread is, beyond the obvious wind-up and class war rhetoric, but for information's sake, let's state a few facts.

Ruminants burp methane, they have to as the anaerobic bacteria in the rumen produce it and they'd blow up if they didn't burp. Grasslands which are grazed by ruminants are full of methanotrophic bacteria which feed on methane to make sugars etc to keep them going. Grassland also releases water vapour, via evapotranspiration, which will be partially split into hydroxyl radicals which break methane down into carbon dioxide. The hydroxyl radicals above grass are over a hundred times more numerous than they need to be to consume all the methane that the ruminants produce.

This might be what the OP was talking about in suggesting farmers need to manage their animals better, but it is hard to tell. Anyway, pasture grazed ruminants are a force for good in the world, the ultimate health food. End of...

Brilliantly put. Even I can understand that.
I think that you ought to do another little part time job as BBC Environment Correspondent after we get the current one sacked.

Thank you @Cowgirl that's the report I keep referring to on here but couldn't find who posted it. @Chris F could that efa news report be posted on the solutions thread please?

From the Eat Lancet report ...

“ Transformation to healthy diets
by 2050 will require substantial dietary shifts. Global consumption
of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes will have to double, and consumption of foods such as red meat and sugar will have to be reduced by more than 50%. A diet rich in plant-based foods and with fewer animal source foods confers both improved health and environmental benefits”

Just seen a great quote on the NZ Farming Facebook page:

"If you leave your car in the garage with the engine running and sleep next to it, by the morning you will be dead.

If you put 5 sheep, 5 cows, and 5 pigs in the garage and sleep next to them, by the morning, you will be warm and alive " We need to get real about the effects of these gasses"

Keep the effects of poisonous gasses in perspective.

I think burning plastic would be great.

Trouble is there won't be much to burn when 'green' packaging takes over.
Wonder how much food will be thrown out when it can't be sealed from the atmosphere.
Maybe we'll have to buy smaller quantities and spend more time driving backwards and forwards to supermarkets.

Jeeze, is it only me? Pasta to me is like eating my way through a paper bag. Have I been missing something in my sheltered life?

Lots of food is actually worse in plastic packaging cos it sweats. No reason for a reduction in plastic to cause more waste.
