Mchale

nothing more needs saying!
I was called to a neighbour to bale hay about a fortnight ago as his contractors mchale f500 was constantly choking. My jd 575 was doing about 50 per hour. I have seen similar before, an f5500 (?) struggling in sticky haylage. They are good balers, but not perfect. None are though.

Edit, just realised the OP wants a belt baler, my experience is with the above roller balers. Wouldn't consider a belt baler for silage only use, ideally you would have both then all options covered.

I’ve been on the other side of that having to go help a NH baler out with the V660.

did more in 10 mins than he had in a hour in straw a couple of year ago.

The V660 was a good baler that would just about gobble anything up. Not perfect mind and the net wrap system was its weak point

moved onto a fusion Vario now and that really is an impressive piece of kit.

The JD will put a bit more in a bale than mchale and fendt /fergy I run a fendt my mate has a jd 960 so first incarnation of the current R and his can pack in the stuff .

I ran 2 separate mchale v660 over 5 seasons and by the end of the second baler they were getting things sorted and now what comes out the factory will make a decent proper belt type bale but I'd still go agco every time it's not perfect but just works day in day out without any fuss .

Jd will also be a chunk more money in our experience from quotes in the past and I don’t think it makes that much difference in bale quality to cover the cost difference

Got a s/h Kuhn belt baler couple of years ago. Really pleased with it. Baled everything that's been thrown at it so far, without any problems.

Net is a pig to thread a new roll, but once it's done I've never had any problems with actual netting.

Running a v451r very happy with it so far makes a good bale tidy on the net, I do think the Kuhn and Jd have the best rotor on the market no dead spots! which obviously Kuhn inherited when it bought Vicon out years ago, only thing ours has had is a sensor and a couple of new chains, besides that it’s been faultless, and the output from them if you do push them is phenomenal! 💪🏻🚜💨💨

Do you not have a Kuhn dealer locally?

Get a demo if you do, and you'll be impressed. Pickup real has side augers integrated with the intake rotor, and it gobbles crop like no other

As has already been said, you change the roll of net, then never leave the seat until it's time to change again

Cleaning the baler at the end of the day is a joy. They've thought about how to minimise nooks and crannies

I demo'd fixed and variable from most when changing a (very good) variable chamber krone. The Kuhn price was one of the lowest, yet made the heaviest best shaped bales with only 120hp up front. Bought a fixed chamber in the end: I bale predominantly grass, and sometimes for neighbours who aren't too particular about rolling down stones. I've seen what stones do to baler belts 🙈

I've stopped baling straw an hour away from home!

Think krone still hold the record for number of bales per hour, but no mention of how heavy they were 🙄

Krone is a superb jack of all trades, will made a lovely bale from anything you can drive over, but wet grass blocks the side augers too easily. It's a bugger to clean, and the net wrap duck bill design is a right footer to get working right
