We were very surprised how dry it was 1200mm down and no field drains in were we are building buy it used to be a stack yard back in the day so that may be your answer
I do think some of the, normally wetter, hillier inland areas look better than here at the coast. But, as you say, permanent pastures beside steadings aren't very representative.

Remarkable nonetheless, given the last 6 months. Will it make a difference to the ground loop re:conductivity?

That is something I don't know it is all new to me but all the ones we have looked at work great and if I can heat the house for next to nothing I will be happy

I know there’s a lot of difference in what individuals will spec but considering a new build and wouldn’t mind an idea of what you think it’ll cost per m2, through to completion or if the collective would be able to give an idea. Pm if you prefer.
When my brother was building there was some telly good magazine out there with prices of different specs per sq ft and some really good ideas well worth buying in my opinion

on ours, they didn't use a wood layer, just a membrane, and slates on top. The building frame work, including roof trusses went up in 2 days, on our prepared base, day 3 roofer waterproofed it with membrane and battens, took him longer to slate, as it wouldn't stop raining ! but did keep dry.
