New LR Defender

Been to JLR Halewood, Merseyside today to see the vehicle in the metal. No production model to show even at this stage. None to be produced for sale for a good while yet, possibly none this year.

Only 240hp diesels available until late next year and deliveries of those to UK customers only starting sometime between late March and late April next year. Might as well call it April/May.
No commercial version until probably mid-2021.
Was told by LR staff member that the diesels were all mild hybrid, but I've seen no mention of that being the case in their literature. He was probably mistaken, at least for the time being. Either that or the people who have printed the specs on the vehicles have left it out. As far as I could tell the engine is exactly as fitted to the Discovery 5, so I can't fathom why they claim such massive development time and testing when the D5 has been in production for over two years already .

What I do like about the four cylinder Ingenium engine is the air-to-water intercooler that won't get clogged up with filth or damaged, being nicely positioned behind the rad at its bottom left.
It is really quite a nice vehicle, but it is more a tough car than a work truck. The technology and high specification incorporated means that it is a competitor to the top Land Cruiser trims [its in a different league], the Mercedes G Wagon and GLS, possibly the GLE, Volvo XC90, BMW X5, but also the Discovery 5 and Range Rover Sport.

It has standard air suspension on 110 models, plus a two speed transfer box, standard automatic, LED lights and 3.5 ton towing plus a ridiculous wading depth that would have it float away if any deeper, plus superior rough terrain [as opposed to rough road] It is theoretically the superior product to all the others, even the Discovery 5.

Rumer is Won't be in production till Feb, landrover have the latest date they can (dec) to put it through ANCAP test because if they leave it to next year the rules change and it wont get 5 stars. Vehicle mechanics all very good but software problems holding things up.

Something is certainly holding it up. Despite years of preparation, they seem to have launched far too soon. No press cars or real road tests yet either you notice.
I guess that part of the problem is with the commissioning and staff training of a brand new factory.

May be they have used a different supplier for engine and drive train electronic pumps and parts?

It really seems more like a Discovery replacement to me

I quite like it but as a nice Comercial when available not really as a car

Indeed it is a Discovery ‘replacement’. Trouble is it may well replace the Discovery 5 rather than create additional sales. I’m probably not going to buy it. The VW Amarok and Merc X-class V6 pickups begin to make some sense compared to this. Two Wildtrak Rangers with change plus tax relief puts it in perspective. One would do me.

I see that JLR lost their case against ineos:

I mean, who in their right mind would grant them exclusive rights to the two box car shape after 60 years of their own production and dozens of other rival similar shape vehicles.
JLR have long given up on the utility sector of the market. The new Defender proves it. So best of luck to Grenadier taking a chunk of that back from the orientals and Ford.
