We have a combine , it’s ready for changing , on market value it’s worth about £100k , my boss thinks selling it and getting a contractor to do the combining is the way to go , I think he is better putting £100k plus trade in to a newer machine , we are farming just over a 1000ac of combinable crops , what do you all think ?

Let me guess, you drive the combine? ;)

How do people with 1000 acres to cut find a contractor to cut it? They must be in an arable area which would suggest that that particular contractor may have another 1000 acre customer to satisfy?
So now we are in 2000 acre territory for 1 combine and 2 customers plus more probably.

Can't see it ending well.

Fair point. I see OP is in North west so may experience similar weather problems to us in Cornwall. My local contractor can't get the output per machine in this area that others may achieve due to small fields and the incessant rain.

we have a local contractor running 14 combines. a lot of his clients are farming over 1000a.its a fair sight when 4 big combines turn up in the next field to me whilst im running our 16 ft combine

I hope you’re not suggesting that some of those arable farmers are looking for ways to avoid getting their hands dirty?😲

It wasn’t very long ago that they would keep some livestock to fill the slack times. Now there seem to be plenty that would rather ease the slightly busier times instead.

So long as you can prove active farmer status, what does it matter?
