Look little crackers !
Still dont think they would be as good a ewe as the blackie x , maybe more flesh and shape to them , but could be softer than the scotch mule.
We have scanned up to 182% on a flock of 500 Lairg type ewes, running at 1000 ft ,they will produce a quality lamb to any tup, they will sell draft at 6 year old at a premium. I have tried mules, bf ,lleyn crosses and texel crosses and none of them could touch the pure cheviot ewe for making money we breed pure for replacements and the balance go to either blue face or Suffolk tups. I admit that I am a great fan of the Lairg cheviot but it is for a reason.
Only a hand full, and they all share the same rams, plus they add a little bit of park type into the hill type to get stronger sheep ,, which doesn't help. ,,its a pity I'd love to try some genuine ones,, never really took of over here.Any good NCC flocks in Northern Ireland?
It has taken me a few years to get to that and to be honest I don't think there is any one thing it is a whole host of small things, there is a bit in the breeding,a bit in the feeding we keep them on rough ground until ten days before tipping and then take them home to the lower ground where they are kept for a night in a field beside the tups, then they are dosed and mineral drenched and put onto as good a grass as we have at that time of year. We also wean about the 20th of august which I think helps. How do you get your Lairg ewes to scan at that ? We are happy if ours do 150% , anything in particular you do ?
Why don't you buy a trailer full and run them alongside your others, just see how you get on.
