I have no evidence all verbal unfortunately

I am i no way nocking our local dealer from all my experience they are very good. i just feel for the money involved and the fact its a one in ever ten year investment i would like two or three prices for the same product.

We ship all sorts of kit around the country so cant see any issues with buying from miles away all its done is make me look at other brands
surely withh the power of the internet and other forum users somone on here can just request a quote on you behalf?

We are looking at replacing a tractor we have looked at lots of brands and want prices on two different brands sold buy the same dealer.
When we have asked for prices they have just priced one machine and said its far better value than the other and havent quoted.
Iv now asked for prices from dealers with the exact spec machine sat in their yard other end of the country they are refusing to quote only saying they could sell it to our local dealer for us to buy from. I call it all price fixing!
Keeping reading there is now money in selling machinery it in the service back up which would go to local dealer so really other than annoying a customer they wont achieve anything!

Fairly sure this behavior is illegal and can be reported.

If I lived in Cornwall and bought a new tractor from cornish dealer with 2 years warranty, and moved to Somerset after a year I bet the cornish dealer wouldn't send a fitter to my new address to change the oil

That's not the case at all. Dealers often turn business away for a variety of reasons. The biggest ones are bad payers, dishonest previous customer experience, exceptionally high maintenance aggressive customers, and distance.
As far as distance goes, nobody wants a deal where a fitter is tied up for most of a day just travelling to do a first service or a relatively minor warranty issue, especially not if there is the possibility of several such issues and 'wasted' time.

Agreed, I have turned work away before.

That's most likely true. They would tell you to use your local dealer. But when it is in its first year the customer usually expects the supplying dealer to stand by the product no matter the distance and time involved. It is not like buying a car, where you can get a nationwide quote through a broker and do the whole deal at a distance and get all warranty and service locally. You could try it with industrial equipment but I doubt the local dealer would give you any kind of priority in a busy period, and neither would the supplying dealer.

You are dealing with people. Pissing them off doesn't generally predispose them to look on your custom favourably. You may not like it but it is human nature, nothing more.

I now for a fact a farm that has bought two new tractors from a dealer about a 100 miles away. A local independent mechanic is now doing the services etc, so there are allwsys ways and means around every perceived problem.

Same with repairs , someone I know had a green American tractor go wrong by their local main yard on the road 3 weeks ago, recovered to their yard and diagnosed gearbox issues , was told 5k and 5 days , as the farmer had bought a green tractor through another dealer down south he mentioned to thsir workshop what it would cost to repair etc , they said 4K and have a lorry by you later today , picked it up from the other dealers yard , fixed in 3 days , 3.5k Bill , mind you local lot are loosing the plot fast with a lot of locals not dealing with them , us for one.

Yes there are all kinds of options one can take when purchasing. Good luck getting a large warranty claim passed by the Gestapo at the big brand with your scenario though. Once out of warranty, good option.

Within 50 miles of me I have Johnston’s tractors BRM or David Henderson if I want a valtra

never actually tried getting a price off all 3 tho

This might sound a bit of the wall. If all TFFs posted on here who are wanting a quote for a new tractor requested other members to ask there dealers for the same/ similar spec ( dealers will get wise of same request. ) do Not include trade ins to start with. I imagine over a period of a year it may hopefully shake the trade up a bit as they will not know whose in the market this year or next.

I’m right in the middle of the overlap of two Red dealers. Can’t see either dealer contacting the other for a whine tbh.

Though I may be wrong.

You can buy off whoever you like they cant stop you, but what is happening is the big brands are making all dealers cover bigger n bigger areas & forcing any sort of
competition out or make it just too awkward as there too far away for us too bother looking anywhere else.
Now if thats not underhand i dont know what is.
Service across the Ag sector is heading one way & thats down. less dealers = less men to sort things end of
They cant get staff as it is now.
