Rates of pay

Hi,

So I am curious as to what self employed farm workers are charging or getting paid these days,
I charge £11/hr and 45p/mile for diesel whenever I am using my pickup for work going round the fields ect...

I provide a pickup that I use to do any job asked of me, 5ks worth of tools so I can take on most jobs away from the workshop and my own trailer that gets used a lot around the farm for a variety of jobs

Where I am currently working I have been doing work for them for over 10 years,
I am mostly a yard based worker around the stores, potato wash and grading facility but I do a lot of loader and forklift work too
I do most of the soil sampling across the fields, I go and do all the sample digging of the potato crops before harvest and clocked up over 1500 miles in the weeks before harvest doing this

I cover for the store manager when he has weekends off or goes on holiday

I have a lot of equipment experience and have run potato planters and other machinery,

So what should I be charging as I feel like I’m not compensating for my expenses but don’t want to be undercut by someone else if I put my rates up

Kind regards

Jordan

Hi Jordan, I’d have thought given the jobs you’re doing another £ or 2 an hour would be better suited . I would find it hard to pay a lot of hours at that sort of money but our combine driver is on £15 but that’s all he does, 200 ish hours a year.

I'd be happy with £10.00/hr if all my transport and travel costs including fuel, insurance RFL servicing & repairs, housing costs including electric, council tax, appliance repairs & replacements, etc. etc. etc. were paid by the business while the value of my business keeps rising as my nest.

Be honest fellas, the cash you draw from the farm is just spending money.

Thats very nice to read about people wanting to fill sandwiches but it doesnt hwlp the op. He is a well trusted memeber of staff on a farm. The fact he is self employed yet only works for one person means he has zero employment laws to protect him so the risk is on him. He is well worth £15-20 per hour

Our 10 year old son earns £10/hr pushing the lawnmower around the neighbour's . Their mower!
Admittedly it's cash, but FFS

Local gardening firm charges their ride on mower out at £60/ph

Makes you realise how far behind ag wages are.

I'm SE, I need to up wages really, £14-15 for sat on a combine or tractor, £20 on the tools, £25 if I get my welder out...

It is a bugger, most systems were designed around labour being cheap! Then, much of it replaced by machines which were also relatively cheap 🤷‍♂️

The only way I can earn a good hourly rate by farming is to limit my hours.... the income is pretty much finite

Well after a discussion with the farm I explained to them that I am struggling to justify being self employed as I'm not earning enough to offset tax through reinvesting my earnings into new tools or equipment to aid myself but also if they want me to work for them full time then they should consider putting me on the books (weren't keen on that idea).
I also stated that I needed to bill enough to justify using my own tools and I was met with the answer that I don't use my tools that often and they can't justify paying me more when I might only use my tools for 4-5 months of the year, but they still expect me to carry them in the pickup.

So I've managed to get another £1/hr out of them but nothing more. In response I have removed all the tools from my pickup (as they don't pay me to use them) and when they next ask if I've got a grinder or a drill the answer will be no and we will see how quickly they realize how much I use my equipment and see how much time we lose when I have to go and find it else where.

You were due a pay rise and you are in the right but i expect your relationship to sour further once each side becomes awkward to each other .

Well done for speaking up. Couldn't have been easy. Hopefully they don't take you for granted anymore.

the hours I can free up from farming let me bring in pay for elsewhere....

People like you are hard to find so I wouldn’t worry to much as you’ll find another job very easily because there’s fewer and fewer quality staff around.

If I was you I’d write to them and tell them you’re actually going to be charging £15/hr from now onwards.

At the end of the day if he’s self employed it’s up to him what he charges, not up to them what they pay!

The op needs to make a dissuasion what he’s worth and charge that, if they won’t pay go somewhere else. It’s not like he needs to give notice as he’s not an employee. Good staff is few and far between so should be plenty of work about for a grafter.

Find a farm that values your time at a rate more in line with what you value it at. Competence is rare, they currently don’t recognize that.

If I was you I would go milk cows. More money
