Rates of pay

I don’t really see why you’re wasting time negotiating your hourly rate if you’re self employed. From my point of view one of the benefits of being self employed is being able to simply state your rate is £x/hr (within reason). This should be take it or leave it.

Leave it for the guys on the books to go cap in hand. As others have said if you’re able, work won’t be long in finding you. At £10 or even £11 per hour using your own pickup and tools you are seriously undervaluing yourself. Similar guys around here are earning around £15/he.

I'm just going to repeat what other have just said. If your self employed, it's up to you to set your hourly rate and the customer to pay it or decline you work. It's near impossible to get good people to work without paying them well so don't be fooled that there isn't any other work around, you just haven't looked for it.

Well after a discussion with the farm I explained to them that I am struggling to justify being self employed as I'm not earning enough to offset tax through reinvesting my earnings into new tools or equipment to aid myself but also if they want me to work for them full time then they should consider putting me on the books (weren't keen on that idea).
I also stated that I needed to bill enough to justify using my own tools and I was met with the answer that I don't use my tools that often and they can't justify paying me more when I might only use my tools for 4-5 months of the year, but they still expect me to carry them in the pickup.

So I've managed to get another £1/hr out of them but nothing more. In response I have removed all the tools from my pickup (as they don't pay me to use them) and when they next ask if I've got a grinder or a drill the answer will be no and we will see how quickly they realize how much I use my equipment and see how much time we lose when I have to go and find it else where.

You're not currently self employed, you're an employee, you should have explained that more clearly to them.
If you want to stay being self employed start getting more customers and working less days at the current place. Explain to them you will be prioritising your better paying customers.
Option 2 find a fulltime job elsewhere. Remember because you are self employed you don't have to give any notice.

You've explained your situation to them and they've basically told you to f**k off, I'd be gone as soon as possible if I were you.

the hours I can free up from farming let me bring in pay for elsewhere....
And the hours spent elsewhere stop me from spending money at "food production", when I can just get mobs in for grazing and shift them around. Otherwise my little farm wouldn't be as profitable as it is

It's hard to justify spending money to make money when you have a large passive income, and a bit of outside work, and your ranch is ticking along

Pity you don’t live a bit further North. I’d have a job for you at a lot more per hour

This is probably where it needs to be. More to the point, being stiff with charges discourages messers and the like.
I don't get anywhere near enough work to make a full time living at it, but i don't job hunt.

I backfill my free time with HGV driving. £15+/hr for a high vis vest and safety boots.

Really appreciate the feedback from everybody,
Finally opened my eyes as to how little attention I was actually paying to what I was doing as how cheap I was selling myself.

I am now pushing to find more work self employed within Shropshire or further.
If anybody does know of any work or businesses looking for temp or more regular laborer's then id appreciate any help.

I have set up a Facebook page to try and generate a little momentum

Another definition of being self employed is that you do not have to do the "task" yourself-you can sub contract it out.

Try telling your "employer" that you will be sending another person to do what you usually do-if he say's it has to be you personally, then he is, in effect saying he is employing you.
