Prelude sons; I only ever bought one bull off Semex and that was Outside. Probably the best sire I have purchased though. A lot of his daughters made old bones.

I'm a big believer in using a small amount of test bulls every year to help find the next generation of sires.

We use test bulls a bit here too, to keep the cost of the mainline semen down. Not happy at the last testbull though, we've just had three heifers from. Our breeding is mostly about positive f&p, shorter cows with a bit of width about them. The stats for the latest test bull indicate a narrow lanky white water holstein of the sort of show ring style that probably sent many people over to the world of cross-breeds. About the only reason I could see to use this bull would be if I had a herd of cross breeds and I wanted something very holsteiny when crossing back. Yuck.

All blue here so its all about the calf not the cow. I presume genomics take a lot of the requirement to evaluate daughters on the ground ? Hopefully

This year I am using Ballycairn Supersire Corinthian, £13 for 50 straws from Genus. And Kirkby Jupiter 4m sexed £24 for 30 straws from Cogent. ABS Masternan Angus £8 from genus 50 straws. And Netherhall Daffy Hereford £7 for 30 straws from Cogent. The current cornerstone young bull is Meadhill Andy at £7. The young test bulls are getting quite expensive now I think.
Was lucky last year to order 100 Chad straws for £12 just before he died. Rep offered to buy 50 back for £15 the day he delivered the straws. But I keept them and will use him for a few years.
