Looking at a wagon for forth coming winter, i know they are expensive to run, but it will solve severeal issues in one.

What do people recommend, it will mainly have a input of chopped round bales, and home grown cereals. How big a machine is required to feed 140 cows plus beef and followers diffrent mix.

Can we get away with 1 mix a day for cows will it stay fresh enough for 24hours?

Thanks

You will not beat a Shelbourne Reynolds wagon the back up and build quality is fantastic. If you buy the smaller single auger machine to increase the capacity you can just bolt on an extension. You wont need a massive wagon id go 11-13 cube better to have one slightly bigger than smaller. One mix will be fine no lots of people feeding once a day into troughs etc. As long as you stick to fully chopped bales and dont go to normal rounds or sqaures they'll mix really easily.

I’ve a 15 cube Shelbourne and feed once a day 140 cows, personally wouldn’t want to go any smaller than that,it’s still a single tub and I run it with 80hp,handles baled silage no bother, either chopped or non chopped rounds it seems to mix them up fine

12months ago we were in same position. Bought a Sherborne 15cube. Unchopped bales are no bigger to it, ours chops 5 or 6 a day. Not all in 1 load tho.

Only trouble is it’s quite high, we have a handler so no problem but our loader tractor only just reaches

We have a telehandler so not to worried, how do people put bales that are chopped into them, do you cut net of on the ground and put in with grab?

Got a 12month old strautmann here had it from new,if your having a new one? There’s always a good waiting list to get one (I waited 8months for mine).twin auger 21cube feeds 260 two loads.its got the new auger design with the stepped augers mix’s a lot quicker.its a lot better than the Mixtec we used to have.most of the good makes are similar,a lot of people say you won’t get better than a strautmann tho,bit more expensive but you get what you pay for.100hp kubota on it drives it easy and mixs straw and bales no probs

Yeah it’s aged well, had it new in 2013 and used every day since it arrived, had a demo twin tub a few months ago and that didn’t mix anywhere near as quick as mine will, just change gearbox oil every year and keep on top of the blades and they should be ok,mines only a simple one with no conveyor, just a door either side.
Would defiantly buy another

Also have a shelbourne here. 22 cube feeds 345 cows in 2 loads. Very pleased with it, build quality is excellent. Don’t have any experience putting silage bales in it though.

Think I could need a bigger feeder this time, simply because of the silage dry matter, 36% Dm and it’s overflowing when I can usually get another ton in if 25-30dm. Our Forage wagon silage won’t help with it been fluffier stuff.

Shelbourne 15cuM here bought it second hand a couple of years ago very impressed with it. All round bales here and we stopped chopping when we got the wagon.

We have a front conveyor on it which is brilliant as it will lift high enough to throw into round feeders if we need the extra space.

Best advice is as someone else said, keep the knives sharp.

We’ve got an top extension for a single auger shelborne sitting here in the yard if anyone wants to extend theirs. Had a couple of shelborne wagons and always been very good, just ordered a new twin auger, twin axel to replace our 3 year old single auger

With bales your going to need a bigger mixer than someone like me feeding a dense high volume straights/silage diet, two mixes a day with a 14/15 cube single auger mixer will be needed.

You will still be feeding the same amount of dm in your wagon I doubt you will need a bigger one for that reason

Does anyone load their shelbourne then start it?

We have one and haven't used it a lot, it quite second hand. We have silage on two sites, I was thinking if putting a engine on it but its a bit of a job.

I've always assumed they needed to be running but we will be putting clamp in so its pretty well chopped.

Have a neighbour that does this as long as its not full of heavy food like dough etc, a massive wagon and everything is well mized and chopped should be fine most of the time, give it some revs first
