Broadmeadows David was apparently the culprit.
Interesting to know; thank you. Nearly wants an entire new thread making on genetic red flags. Be interesting to compile a history of these bad nature originators.

Mountjoy Utopia is the only BB family line I’ve seen crap attitude from. Be interesting to see if people agree on that one.

If there’s a bad one in the back breeding it seems to rear its head somewhere and in breeding females it doesn’t necessarily skip a generation but waits for 2 or 3 calves before it blows out
Plenty of bulls are quiet because they themselves are penned, handled, fed, scratched, washed or haltered..

We had AA and Lims out of dairy in the past, the cows themselves were like pets, probably because they were bucket fed, but their Sim calves were wild despite the Sims being pretty docile.

I have a friend who started out with AAx Dairy cows that were quiet enough, they put them to a very docile Hereford and the calves are wild.
He says he hardly has a Her×AA cow that wouldn't wreck you at calving.

Not got an AA line left on the yard here for the maternal aggression trait. -SM tend to be silly sooner than nasty, but it still poses a risk. My gang all get the same treatment so if one doesn’t fit they soon show themselves.

Empty of sexed Holstein semen even though I had one ordered since late October [it’s now mid February]. Finished one of the nominated bulls and only had half of the other. Substituting now with a half brother. Waiting for Equity but currently substituting with Mendel. I have about 15 with PRID synchronised for the end of next week, so I hope Equity will have arrived by then, although some of them will be having Blue’s anyway.

You tried Dovea UK for dairy semen or are you on contract?

Has anyone any experience of this Australian Limousin AI bull?

A few years ago I bought 6 weaned heifers, sired by the same bull, off one farm.
Weighed them every month. Since they were for breeding, monitored their temperaments closely.
The ones with the worst temperaments had the worst daily liveweight gain and the ones with the best temperaments had the best dlwt gain, all the way from 6mths old to 15mths, never varied.
The two with the worst temperaments didn't get bulled. The one with the next worst temperament had a dead calf and went fat.

That taught me that a good temperament has economic advantages too.
It stands to reason, all that nervous energy they use up. Wouldn't help eating quality either. Herefords show up well on both counts.

We have about 50 straws of Bo a Danish Belted galloway bull.
It can’t be used on Galloways / Murray Grey any longer but perfect for anything else, such as dairy heifers. Cost a fortune but no good for pedigree BG breeding so open to any reasonable offer to get them out of our tank.

What's gone on there then?
And where does the Murray Grey fit into things?
It’s Alpha Mannosidase. A genetic condition. Here is what I understand:
If an AM carrier breeds with another carrier you get statistically:
1 x AM free calf which is obviously good.
2x AM carriers which appear to be good and are totally functional
1x AM positive calf born dead or dies shortly after birth.
In Australia about 30 years ago they just culled out the AM carriers and wiped out AM.
I think that is sensible so we tested the whole herd. We were all clear except for 3x heifers by Bo which went for meat. They could have still been registered as pedigree in the UK so it was a loss of money, but I think it was the right thing to do.
I think AM only affects Galloways and Murray greys.
Thus the straws are totally safe for use with a dairy herd for example.
The situation is a bit complicated and many breeders are not put off buying AM carriers for pedigree breeding.
