Would it be asking for a failure if I ploughed winter beans in on heavy clay land that was meant to be going into second wheat but that is a none starter now as achieving an acceptable seedbed will be impossible....?!

Not before September. You wouldn't put them in as deep in February.
I’ve often wondered about dragging them in with a C tine. Always seem to come ok even when you can’t see many behind the combine
