Winter beans

Would it be asking for a failure if I ploughed winter beans in on heavy clay land that was meant to be going into second wheat but that is a none starter now as achieving an acceptable seedbed will be impossible....?!

Ploughing in is the traditional way. I've seen some shallow drill then into the stubble then plough. Power harrow level.

I reckon you'd be fine.
Try not to plough too deeply.
They'll be spread through the soil profile and come up in rows as per the furrow width.

Did it years ago most years, always got a crop so you should be fine. Quite often didn’t get the top worked, just a bit rough on the sprayer for the year

Only problem is if the pods set low, harvesting close to lumpy ground

If it is too wet to plough properly wait beans in a wet seed bed breed bg and are lower yielding

In my experience on heavy clay, beans like a good seed bed just like any other crop.

When would you expect to combine Feb planted winter beans?

We usually drill ours with out Kockerling AT300 with 17" shares - I'm thinking of cutting some down to about 10" to pull less kelter up and make it easier to pull. Not ploughing them down on sticky land here, been there got that tee shirt, and the rough ride with the sprayer and combine after!!

Not before September. You wouldn't put them in as deep in February.

Always liked the idea of bolting a hopper on top of the terrano, pipe down each leg and bung them in. Maybe next time - seed sold out apparently, but I expect a lot will not get drilled this time round.

It doesn’t always work like that. It all depends on the weather throughout the growing season. I’ve planted crops late and they’ve harvested earlier than normal and others early and they’ve harvested late. I’ve planted winter beans mid April and harvested them in the third week in August before.
